J1 attack on Russia in Global

  • I have yet to see a J1 attack on Russia in any game of Global A+2, though it has seemed interesting lately as something to try out, for several reasons.

First of all, I would only ever attack Russia if it amassed its 18 inf in Amur, and only if I planned to declare war on the Allies on J3. With 10 infantry stationed in Manchuria/Korea and two transports within striking range (as well as supporting BB/CR and aircraft) the Japanese could just about annihilate the Russian stack in one round of combat. With this force destroyed, there is nothing stopping Japan from sending a few units westwards to grab the Russian territories. They’re not worth much, but it would allow the Japanese player to about double its territorial gains during the first few rounds when Japan is only fighting China for 1 IPC a territory, and it doesn’t bring the Western Allies into the war. That little mech the Japanese start with could be very useful in eastern-central Russia.

This move would also prevent the mid- to late-game reinforcement of those 18 inf to the Western Front, where they could have a very decisive effect on the war Russo-German war. Russia could reinforce China in turn during the early turns, but a well-planned strike by the Germans would make every infantry sent eastwards a very tough decision for the Russian player.

Of course, I’ve never tried this strategy and don’t know if I ever will, since Japan has so many strategic options and can easily spread its forces thin.

  • Right, if Russia stacks on Amur- you gotta go for it.  Yeah you give them 12IPC (4inf) but you rid of 18inf + AA that could be used in the West.  This would really help Germany.  Otherwise if the Infantry go West from the start- forget about Russia- for now.  Usaully a good time to attack Russia is through China later on if the opprotunity rises (usaully after round 5-6).  Gotta watch your back though- US may or may not be breathing down your neck.

INALY a game where Japan NOT attacking Russia is the sound strategic move

I disagree, I think it’s still PARAMOUNT that the Japanese attack eastern Russian States.  They are worth the same as Chinese territories, except, they’re doubly important.  -1 for Russia +1 for Japan.  The Russians can’t replace their eastern most units.  And you basically deny them that income for the game.

  • I think its a fools errand, it gets you involved in a money sink up north
Your getting peanuts compared to the DEI money, and you are weaker against the Pacific allies because you are investing in the north.

Not to mention giving the USSR a 12 dollar bill

  • In the 10 games of Alpha+2 my group has played Japan has always does better when they go to war earlier, the more experienced players do well and the Axis have got the win. I’ve found that if you wait then the Allies have more time and money to build and plan. I also think that the 12 dollar bonus for attacking Russia and taking FIC  plus Russian territories along with the Islands worth the most money helps Japan more than waiting and only getting the 10 bonus for not going to war. I also put pressure China with my Air Force and my land units sometimes I’ll send my planes to eliminate territories where I need to go  the Burma road . I also like to get a factory by J3  there is only one country between Japan and Germany.  So far our games have been about 50/50 with some undecided due to time . CANT WAIT TO PLAY THIS WEEKEND !!!

  • A J1 attack on russia can be benificial if they moved all their infantry on the front, only because you can get a ton of planes there(but it still hurts Japan for much needed ground forces),  if they back off I usually just try a coax them into attacking.  I find Its best to protect Korea instead of Manchuria.  Korea is benifical for Russia to capture for income while china probally wont see the money from Manchuria.

or just block korea, so russians won’t recieve money.

  • Tally one for the Axis this weekend.  It was a good war and the Axis won a few key battles with some luckier rolls than the Allies ,  no Sea Lion or fake Sea Lion just Barbarossa .  Japan went after China and the Soviet Union on one,  set up for landings in the Philippines Aleutians Hong Kong the Pearl Harbor battle and Borneo I also put pressure on ANZAC with my Carrier and Destroyer from the Caroline Islands.  I brought the Carrier and planes up to hit Hawaii along with the Destroyer . J1 was 2 Trans and 2 Subs. J2 was 1 Carrier 1Dest 2 Subs 1Trans.  J3 was a Minor Fact, Inf, Art enough to fill my Trans and the rest on Navy.  I was lucky on a few key battles to keep the USA at bay time after time, of the 4 times I’ve pulled Japan out of the cup,  the Axis have won 2. My Axis partner, this was the first time he’s pulled Germany, he’s had 10 or so games to see how everybody else has played the Axis.  Yes Japan has taken some real beatings.
