Hitler attacked in the West because he had to.

    LOL

    Good one.

What’s funny about it? Hitler took Norway straight from under the noses of the Brits. Because he had to. Hitler attacked France in order to destroy them before they themselves launched an attack on Germany. Because he had to.

Another way of saying it is that he did it because he was not an idiot. He knew what would happen if he would have done nothing. The Allies took the initiative by declaring war. Hitler took it back by going on the offensive. In any case he was not the aggressor in the west.

  • @calvinhobbesliker:

Actually, the book supports your claim that the allies started the war

Interesting. I will have to read it.

France and Britain had 6 months to start an offensive and they failed. They were hoping for a stalemate, and only planned for a defensive war in the west. Thus, Germany started the war in the West(and invaded some neutrals while he was at it).

  • What’s funny about it? Hitler took Norway straight from under the noses of the Brits

No, he took Norway away from the Norwegians and invaded a neutral country. It doesn’t matter if it was because he needed to just secure resources, it was still a deliberate attack on a sovereign nation, which is aggression in my book.[

[quote]Hitler attacked France in order to destroy them before they themselves launched an attack on Germany.

Is that why we built the Maginot Line?

Another way of saying it is that he did it because he was not an idiot. He knew what would happen if he would have done nothing.

He could have not invaded Poland and provoked a conflict. No, he was the aggressor of the war for the war in Europe and especially the Blitzkrieg to the West, and will until the end of history be remembered as the aggressor.

calvinhobbesliker also makes a good point in the post above this one.

  • Stay on topic. This is only about box art. Nothing else.

As for Norway, GB was just about to take control of it when Hitler launched the invasion.

As for Denmark, BeNeLux and France, he feared that if he did nothing, then he could expect an allied attack at any time. By taking control of these areas, he believed he could force GB to accept peace, thus ending hostilities. Hitler wanted GB as allies, not enemies.

    GB chose to:

    1. Declare war.

    2. Refuse peace offered by Hitler and carry on the fight after France fell.

Again, I’m not saying Hitler wasn’t a dirtbag, I’m saying look at the facts. Great Britain was very much involved in making it a world war.

    Sorry. Back on topic.

Yeah, sorry about all this getting off topic stuff. I suppose most of it was my fault.

… causing trouble on his first posts… jeez… watch out for this LHoffman dude, he seems to be a troublemaker…

All in all… I am more impressed with the box art for Pacific '40. Though I guess it is what is inside the box that really counts. Sometimes I can get hung up on appearance though, because I derive much pride from displaying the games themselves, when they are in the boxes. I also love to just sit and look at them. They are all extremely interesting and very detailed… conveying so much emotion, the essense of the war. I seem to find something new to look at every time I gaze at them. Hopefully I will find Europe '40 to be the same. My compliments to the artists.

  • @calvinhobbesliker:

Anything with swastikas are banned in Germany, so that would reduce the sales.

WOTC could make a different box for games sent to Germany.

WOTC could make a different box for games sent to Germany.

Do you really think WOTC is going to spend money for two types of packaging?  Do you see how much they spend on advertising?

    It is just wishful thinking.

I agree with LHoffman. I think the box art is boring - it looks just like the last few we have had. I was really hoping for something more exciting this time, with a large German representation on it. Personally, I don’t think we need to see flags on the cover at all. Leaves more room for battles/soldiers/tanks/planes/ships. I think every game should have a good deal of distinction in terms of style and colours. Guadalcanal had this cool green look to it which reminded me of the island jungles and stuff.

I would agree with Lozmoid also. I guess it would have been fine by me if they had left off the flags… if they had done that in the first place we wouldn’t have had our previous discussion. I would agree that this new one looks more or less ‘boring’ in comparison to others I have seen. It also seems somewhat less creative. But hey… it is what it is, and I am still excited for it.

Somebody had posted that they could make a different box to sell in Germany…

While I think that would be the only way it would work, I doubt it would ever happen. Somebody mentioned how much AH spends on advertising… how much do they spend on that? I am curious, because I am not exposed to much of it.

    This much…

    This much…

    Oh… interesting. Are you serious?

Depending on their budget, that could be a lot or a little.

  • I don’t get the “hoopla” over the box art.  What does the box art really got to do with what is in the box or how good the game is.  I say wrap the box in brown paper, save a lot of money and reduce the cost or put in more units.  As it is, I generally trash the box and put all my units into fishing tackle boxes.  My game boards go into a large Rubber Maid tub with a lid that seals.  I have books of war art; I don’t need or care for something on a game box.  Maybe I’m just an old curmudgeon or my patience has been worn thin by my junior high students (one week left!), but “I don’t get the “hoopla” over the box art”.

  • I like the box art personally. Again I save the boxes because it is free storage for me. Personally if they were just a monochrome color with Axis & Allies written on it, I could honestly not care less.

Nah, I’m not sure how much they spend on advertising. shrug But what I would do to see an Axis and Allies commercial…

WOTC spends little to no money on advertising Axis and Allies.  Go to their website.  There is no mention of Europe 1940 anywhere.
