7.2 Sub and other questions from recent playtest, game notes.

  • Liaison TripleA '11 '10

#1. A German sub attacks a lone transport off of Cairo.  Cairo has an airbase and a fighter.

    • Can the british plane scramble to defend it’s transport?  or no - because subs and planes can’t hit each other?

#2.  A sub and a bomber attack a destroyer and a sub. Both the attacking sub and bomber hit, and the defenders hit nothing.

The defender selects his destroyer as his sub casualty, and then says that the bomber casualty is irrelevant because it can’t hit the sub.  Is this correct?  Or must the defender choose to select the bomber casualty on his destroyer, and the sub casualty on his sub.

#3. Siam, the 7.2 rulebook discusses the Siamese factory in 2 different locations.  in one location, Japan can build a major factory in siam, in the other location of the book, only a minor is allowed.  Please confirm.

#4. US production.  The current 7.2 rulebook stats that a Japanese invasion of Australia is only +2 to U.S. production, this must be a typo.  But is it +20? or +25?

#5.  Germany invades Norway via airborne landing,  but also moves it’s fleet through the Danish straights and along the norweigan cost, so that it can attack Britain.  Is the attack on the british blocked by the neutrals ships? If Germany were to invade amphibiously from these zones, they would have to face said ships.  Our group came to the consensus that the ships would block movement through the zone.

#6. Is there a limit to fortresses per territory? We could not find a ruling in the book.  And can they be SBR’d?

#7.  Does communist china get an income?  or do they just get 1 infantry a turn?  If they don’t collect an income, there seemed little reason to do anything with them.  We house ruled the following, Communist China gets an income, and can build (infantry only) accordingly, unless they earn less than 3.  in which case they can always place atleast one man, and surrender any ipc’s (1or2) to the bank.

#8. Factory clarification, can you build minor factories on territories you have conquered?  or can you only build factories on original territories.  The new rule that factories are lost when captures was cool, and balanced the axis advance,  but not being able to build new minor factories on conquered territories may be too steep a hill to climb.

#9. Scorched earth, can you destroy facilities on your turn? that you control?  is this at the beginning of your turn (purchase phase) or the end?

    Other notes

    • The new Helsinki NO is more or less impossible to obtain, even when having Helsinki/all-of-Finland. This NO should be stricken from the game, or the restriction that Russia must have all of its’ territories, should be lifted.  Especially with with finlands starting infantry now doubled to 10, Helsinki will be ignored.

    • USA’s special disability of bad subs should be removed from the game. The subs simply don’t get built and it detracts from game enjoyment.

    • Russia’s special disability of poor defense against first german attack should either be removed from the game as the point is usually moot (nothing to attack), or moved to the German 3 page document of special advantages

    • The Novisibirsk force is a game saver, and has a great balancing effect. Please do not change.

    • German price adjustment for tanks, and Russia’s price adjustment balanced the eastern front significantly, please do not change.

-The change of spain’s war entry threshold was a good change

    • We playtested scrambling aircraft carriers, the verdict is still out on them… the biggest challenge is that people often forgot the rule.

  • Tigerman ???

    I agree with ya Gar.

    SS,

Thank you for your PM.  However… I don’t quite understand one item.

Are subs allowed to CHOOSE whether they sneak attack? or not?

  • Yes

lol…  Ok so let me get this straight.

A sub attacks a lone transport off of malta.  Malta has a fighter on it.

If the sub does a regular attack, the malta fighter can’t see it? transport is destroyed.  But if the sub does a ‘sneak’ attack the fighter can see it, and defend?

And where in the rules does it say the sneaks are optional? I looked… also… why would you ever choose not to sneak attack?

The language describing sneak attacks implied that they were optional.  It was not 100% clear.

  • Yes we have had many debates about this sneak attack rule.
Rule says If a sub uses its first strike ability, it is considered detected for 1 round of combat.
On that round of combat, Battleships, Cruisers,Destroyers and Aircraft may return fire.

So if it doesn’t use a first strike ability… it can’t be hit?  wtf.

Pretty Much, it makes sense for game balance, but not so much for realism.
