What's the worst luck you've had in trying to take a territory?

  • @agutting:

50 bombers, 40 BB bombardments, 1 infantry vs 1 Bomber.

    I lost.

    It’s possible.

How on earth did that happen??!! More info please.  Like where was this battle?

Many years ago in conquest of the empire I attacked Hispania with 7 nitwit squadrons (7 galleys with 7 inf ea.) in an effort to regain catapult supremacy. I failed to roll a single 6 in 49 rolls.

  • Through the course of 3 separate engagements, I lost the entire Japanese fleet to the British off India (he did have a carrier and 2 planes though).  The mighty Italians finally took it out for me.

  • 50 bombers, 40 BB bombardments, 1 infantry vs 1 Bomber.

    I lost.

After that in the same AA50 game I had 4 fighters vs 1 unescorted transport and lost.

That’s such awful luck its not even possible according to the rulebook!

According to the rulebook its really not possible :
    1. more than one BB bombardment with only one inf
    2. lose against one unescorted transport

Psssst, your sarcasm detector is broken.  Note, in the second quote it even mentions that it is not possible.

  • Lets talk about the best Luck I had :)

I played a game against myself yesterday.

Russia (13IPC) was down to almost Italy (11IPC) in term of IPC. Russia was surrounded by About 12 Japanese tanks. 7 Fighters, 1 Bomber, and a mass of infantry. JApanese could attack both Moscow and Caucasse. Germany had Karelia and could take the remaining Russia territory. Even Italy was at Caucasse door!!

Africa has been retaken by UK (26 IPC or so)
Japanese set foot on Alaska with 6 infantry 2 artillery. (With about 58 IPC excluding NO, so 73)

So it all starts like this. I finish my Japanese turn by moving my Fleet to Hawaiians and took the Island. I had 2 AC 4 Fighter, 2 DD, 1 SS, 1 BB, 1 Cruiser. American had 1 AC (2 fighter), 3 DD, 2 SS. It looked to me like an easy win. BUT, that’s before realizing that 2 American Bomber could reach my Japanese fleet. The American Bomber had Heavy Bombers.

On American turn, I attack the Japanese fleet.
    2 Bomber @ 4, 2 Fighter @ 3, 5 @ 2 and 1 @ 1 against  2 AC 4 Fighter, 2 DD, 1 SS, 1 BB, 1 Cruiser
Not only have I won, but I’ve lost only 2 Submarine and 2 Destroyer! The Bomber hit 7 times out of 8.

Japan was not defended. The American fleet could reach it. So I decided to make 5 Infantry + 1 AC 2 fighter. I think it was really a mistake. I should have made 8 tanks or 7 Aircraft + infantry to defend Japan. At first, I made a fleet to make sure that the Fighters would be forced to fight. But then, I realized that even with 1 AC and 2 fighters, the American could easily wipe out that fleet. (There were a Japanese Island I’ve took so the bombers from Western USA could attack the fleet and could land and the 2 other bombers that participated in Hawaiians island could attack Japan and land too!)
Anyway, the JApanese fleet was easily wiped out. With 2 bombers and 2 transports (4 infantry), I easily took Japan.
On that round too, I decided to push my luck a little more. I decided to attack Germany that was defended by
11 Infantry, 2 artillery, 2 tank, 2 fighter (France was already taken).

    I had
3 infantry and 1 tank from France (UK had about 8 units there too, making it “too risky” for the Germans) and 2 infantry and 1 tank from Norway. I’ve sent 5 Bombers from UK too.
basically, I had 7 grounds units to take some damage and 5 killer.
First round of fire, I’ve lost all my infantry, but I’ve killed Germany’s infantry and artillery! (Talk about luck on one side and no luck on the other!) I took Germany with 1 tank remaining.
So USA made like 60IPC that round, and took 73 from Japan and 47 from Germany for a total of about 120 IPC. I decided to call it a game. Russia was dead. I mean, Russia was going to be wiped out of the game. But that doesn’t change the fact that Japanese had 0 IPC and couldn’t take back her Island. Italy was doing ok, but there was no way he could defend Italy with 12 IPC.

    good game luck :)

I know I’ve made some mistakes during the game, but I think I’ve made some on both side. I did build on UK1 an IC in India. Was forced to abandon it UK3 :S

  • I have a picture of a transport taking out my Battleship with a transport peice of fodder in AAR.
I also lost on 18 tanks, 4 fig, 1 bomb, 2 Art 7 inf vs 10 inf, 1art, 3 fig on an Attack on Moscow which cost me the game.

  • i once rolled 7 1’s at an AA gun of 11 figs
i once shot down 4 bombers in 3 SBR’s, the first 3 that is (rounds 1 and 2)
i always throw godo against at the battle of moscow

    while my friend…
he only rols 1’s at SBR and technology
he rols 7 6’s, with whatever troops
and always had terrible luck in moscow (once, he rolled 12 tanks, and had no hits)

  • Worst luck in trying to take a territory?
I had 3 out of 3 HEAVY bombers shot down by AA fire (1’s) in the same round, attacking two different territories.
In the same game, I had 13 japanese tanks attacking 3 american tanks
in central USA.  In the first round all 13 jap tanks missed, and all 3 american tanks hit.  Fortunately, in round 2 after it was 10 against 3, it went more according to odds.  Also, I could absorb those losses and still take Eastern USA on the next turn (Heavy bomber support).
I’m sure Omega remembers this game as well, as he was my opponent  :-D

In a current game I attacked 2 inf units in NWE w/3inf arm and was wiped out without inflicting a casualty  (Italians of course). On the next German turn  I attacked with a similar force; cleared but did not take it.

In another game I attacked YUN '41  w/3 inf 2 fig….got wiped out…I think I managed to hit the inf.

Needless to say, I’m in deep shit in both games

  • Just today, I attacked a naval force of 5 transports, 4 destroyers, and 1 battleship with 6 bombers.

Round 1:  My 24 Punch gets 1 hit - a soak on his battleship, and his 12 Punch gets 3 hits.

Round 2:  My 12 Punch gets 1 hit - sink 1 destroyer, and his 12 Punch gets 3 hits again.

Final Score:  I lost 72 IPCs of bombers just to destroy one 8-IPC destroyer.  :-(

Why can’t you roll like that against me???

  • Bad luck in war is entirely realistic. Look at Midway. Japanese rolled badly historically, losing 4 carriers and all fighters and failing to capture the island while US just lost a carrier and some fighters.

So if you convert to IPCs it would be 4 carriers = 56 and 8 fighter = 80  vs.

    1 carrier and 2 fighter = 34

Japan lost 136 IPCs compared to 34 for the US.

    :-o

An excellent point.  Can you do that for the Germans on the Russian front, too?

  • I love these stories.

  • I’m afraid I have a new one.

    J2, attack on India.

I tried a new strat of ignoring China (at least for first turn or two) and trying to go through Russia and UK territories.  After all, you’re taking money away from other powers that way…

So I just got LRA for 10 bucks (yeeha) and then attacked India with 3 infantry, 4 fighters, and 1 bomber.  It’s a good thing I didn’t send in more (I had more air than that).
India defended by 4 infantry, 1 fighter, and the all-important AA.

Yep - I killed one UK infantry unit.
AA killed 3 out of 4 fighters, AND the bomber.
    I lost 2 infantry, 3 fighters, 1 bomber to 1 infantry (48 to 3)
Fortunately I decided against an IC in neighboring Burma, because the UK could easily take it over.
My only consolation - I still have LRA, 5 fighters and a bomber.
I think the RNG on this site is very random and reliable (I mean, it simulates dice well).  I have never seen a roll like this until now, on this site (4 out of 5 ones).

48 to 3!  My battle calculator had me at 85% of victory, and that includes taking over the territory (worth 8!).
That’s probably the worst luck I’ve had in trying to take a territory.

    It’s reply #72
You can enjoy my reaction, too.

  • at tripleA, at big world with low luck, i rolled 7 times a 6 while i needed a 5 or less to hit

  • This all goes to show that you can have the best plan in the world and it can still fail due to bad luck.
