  • Hey, if any of you are inclined, I like to ask my opponents why they play on TripleA. So what are the reason(s) you all are gaming on this platform? PM me if you don’t want to clutter up the forum. Thanks ahead of time and no worries if you don’t care to answer.


  • As to why playing online: I like playing this way because we can save the game and continue at a later time. I prefer playing face to face from time to time, but Covid has made that impossible.

    As to why TripleA: The forum and its members made it very easy to start using it, when we first started looking for an online platform. Also it was free (not unimportant).
    There are versions on Steam, but they offer only 1 scenario (1942) or seem very time consuming (Tabletop Simulator).


  • For me, I would say I have mixed emotions about playing on here. Partly, I like the Play-by-Forum cause it usually offers more calculated moves and well thought through strategies. More eye for detail.
    On the other hand, I would say I miss the tabletop excitement and the slight miscalculations, and a higher pace. Most significant is the battle calculator. If it’s there, you can use it to plan battles two/three turns ahead, and you will always do so. I think this impairs the game and improves it at the same time. Taking a chance, not knowing exactly if it’s 60-40 or 40-60, adds something. It doesn’t hurt the core of the game though, which for me is the game of balancing daring, control by setting yourself up with the best chances possible and handing over control to luck when the time comes.


  • Axis and Allies can be a time consuming game. And although I like spending a weekend on a good match of Global, in reality finding the time can be cumbersome. Playing online reduces the investment it requires and allows for a game of a few hours. It also removes some of the tension that I have during a physical game: where in an online game I tend to go more experimental and am more likely to try something new, I do not quickly dare that in a real life game in case it results in a premature game over.

    Why this forum? I do not really play by forum a lot. If I do, it is with the the lovely chaps I play with right now. We have done quite some play-by-mails in the past, and only incidentally I use this forum with them. The upside is that it allows you to play with other players for once. The downside of this format is that I can stare at the map for hours - as nobody urges me to hurry up…

    As for my move: I will try to find some time for some war between all the Christmas stuff that is going on here.

  • I went into EDIT mode to check how the game react with putting units on a transport in a hostile sea zone. Wanted to know if you could stop me from transporting my units by just simple putting a sub at Borneo (I also went to another save game to check the behaviour in the combat phase).
    This topic is a hotly debated one, but in this case I follow the tripleA rules ;)


  • @LederhosenMachtFrei I don’t think there should be much of a debate. From the rulebook page 6:

    Sea Zones
    Sea zones are either friendly or hostile. Friendly sea zones contain no enemy surface warships. Hostile sea zones contain enemy surface warships. Note that the presence of enemy submarines and/or transports does not count for the purposes of determining whether or not a sea zone is hostile.

    …and then here on page 16:

    Transports
    If a transport encounters hostile surface warships (not enemy submarines and/or transports) AFTER it begins to move (not counting the sea zone it started in), its movement for that turn ends, and it must stop there and conduct sea combat.


  • …and here on page 30:
    A transport cannot load or offload while in a hostile sea zone.

    …and best of all, here on page 31:
    Remember that hostile sea zones contain enemy units, but that for purposes of determining the status of a sea zone, submarines and transports are ignored.
