ABH over me, with an early massive dose of luck against the Russians, and that was pretty much over from round 5, altho I managed to stretch it to round 32 and could’ve kept going for another 10 rounds at least.
he openly admitted his strategy was to take whatever lucky chance he could get since he considers himself the weaker player. I do not enjoy playing someone who’s primary strategy is to get lucky. so now I know to avoid playing him and anyone who will have that mindset. while I can understand going for luck if you’re losing and feeling desperate, but to go for such odds right at the outset, before anyone has any real advantage? to make that your primary strategy? sorry but for me, this game is fun because it offers more tactics and strategies than a lot of common games out there, but that gets thrown out the window with this kind of approach (I would have same complaint if the battle went horribly wrong for him, as it would not be any fun for me if he threw the game that early on).
Maybe he only wanted to try 1 round and retreat, but got pretty lucky in that rd1 so he pressed forward?
no, he was taking big gambles like that all game actually, even earlier than that he did same kind of Hail Mary on my fleet in 110, but that came out roughly even. he later did similar big gambles in pac. I’ve actually played him a few times in the past, and while I remember he would like to gamble like this a lot, it never seemed like he would do it as his main strategy. it always seemed like he would do it on a smaller scale here and there, and only when he started losing and getting more desperate. but what bugged me about this game is that he admitted he was determined to try out any such 30 to 50% odds in hopes of getting lucky, and it was so early on that it didn’t make any sense to go for poor odds unless you were just praying for some luck as your strategy.
Ha ha, that’s funny. I guess you got to give they guy credit for having the balls to do it. But honestly, hitting a 40%-50% battle isn’t unreasonable, or even 30% if its small.
I hate to bring this ancient debate back, again, but I think while the battle calc is a useful tool, it isn’t the final word. Minor shifts in dice rolls can flip a battle hard. A few extra hits round 1, BOOM the odds go from 30% to 80% just like that…
But he didnt just won the battle, he butchered russians. From 30 % he wins the battle, ok, but instead of - 60 to +100. If he won with +10-20 ok, but this was super lucky.

@Amon-Sul Somebody should fix the scoring mechanism. I’m pretty sure there are common solutions to this, like how Chess has rankings and I play Starcraft which does a decent job.
Excluding losing games is silly. For some reason the League was biased this way under the old system as well in 2007 when I last played.
I do not say we should exclude lost games. But i do not say the current system is perfect too.
-
@Amon-Sul Right, I’m talking about the League scoring system excluding losing games, not you.
-
@Amon-Sul That is no doubt some very unlucky dice but it seems silly to complain and call out the other player. This is a dice game after all. Good dice will overcome bad strategy but this doesn’t seem like the way to go. Not to mention there could be a lot of reasons this was a good strategic move even with unfavorable odds initially.
One thing to note though is that simulators like this have a hard time showing how critical the early rounds are in these battles. Especially when one army is attacking with a lot of units rolling 1’s. Keep in mind that every unit killed by the attacker removes a defender at 2 while every kill on defense only removes an attacker at 1. Large battles like this have a much flatter bell curve so to speak than most realize.
What do I know though, I am on a terrible losing streak and it is all the dices fault.

@Amon-Sul sorry just noticed i replied to the wrong person. Blah that is what i get for sticking my nose where it doesn’t belong.

I don’t want to be a bother but I think my second win over Sovietishcat has not been counted. I suppose that if I wanted to cling to my Master ranking for as long as possible I should have kept my mouth shut.
You’re absolutely right - I was AWOL here for almost a month - updating everyone now! I do note the last update date at the top of the spreadsheet, for your future reference :)
And yes, your M status went down in flames ;) -
AD, I can ease the suffering a bit by giving you 2 points for ABH instead of 0, since he was tier 1 a few years ago. In case he doesn’t finish 3 games this year…

Hey, koala is atleast tier 1, likely E, but maybe won’t finish 3 games this season either. Just sayin’…

Hey, I clearly finished 3 games. Just sayin. :P

We can switch to an Elo-system and everyone will be happy. :)

This is a good post, well said Aldo

Squeaky wheel gets the grease, Trulpen, unless it’s you

Don’t ELO systems always add to your rating if you win, no matter how weak the opponent? Encourages bottom feeders who get inflated ratings, no thanks.
-
I think I misinterpreted this. Apologies!
“However, against a single opponent, only best of 3 games will count (maximum of 2 wins for 1 player). This limit can be expanded when both you and your opponent have completed more league games:”
-
No problem, thanks akreider, I think I see what you’re saying. I thought I just confused you by not updating anything for a few weeks.
Sorry everybody, I’ll put it on my calendar, and maybe make it a habit to update every Sunday night or something (at a minimum)
-
@gamerman01 A proper system should add to your ranking based on the probability of winning or losing. So if you play a very weak player and have a 1/1000 chance of losing, your ELO gain if you win should reflect that.
-
@akreider2 And thus an ELO gain by a favored player in a match where they are expected to crush their opponent should be very small.
