[House Rules] Japan round 1 buyings

  • Let`s see what should be the best buyings on Japan 1.

    Japan 1:

    1) 3 transports, 1 marine

A pretty powerfull combination for striking allied islands soon.

    2) 2 transports, 1 IC

Combination of both island striking and land expansion in the Asian mainland.

    3) 4 marines, 1 sub

Using cruisers and bats to the maximum plus one more sub is a powerfull buy.

    4) 1 des, 1 sub, 1 IC

Strengthening the navy plus the land expansion in the Asian mainland.

    5) 2 transports, 1 bomber

Striking allied islands plus bombing their facilities is an interesting buy.

    6) 2 transports, 2 subs

Striking allied islands plus sending cheap units into sea battles and convoy blokades of the allies is a good buy.

    7) 2 transports, 4 infantry ( or some other land combination for 12 IPC)

Since Japan starts with 3 transports and 12 land units in Japan, after deploying 6 of them on rd 1, it has 3 transports, and 6 land units on Japan left. With 2 more transports and 4 more infantry, it can deploy 10 units to SE Asia on rd2. (Japan can take along an infantry from Okinawa and/or Iwo Jima so the buyings could be 3 art, or 2 tank, or art, marine and an inf).

    8) 1 AC, 2 marines

Interesting combination of strengthening the navy plus boosting the island taking power.

    9) 2 des, 2 marines

Similar as the last one, just with less air defence but more blocking power.

    10) 1 des, 1 sub, 1 tra, 1 marine

Strengthening the navy plus the island expansion in the Pacific.

I think this thread goes in the House Rules section.

  • Buyings are not a house rule, but a part of the strategy of the game.

  • That’s true but many of these are for BM.  I’m not sure where the thread belongs but good stuff :)

  • ah, I see.

But everyone plays BM these days. I count it as the standard version

I’ve never played BM. This section is for Global 40 only. It should either be moved or ask the admin to create a new section for BM which wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Some of these buys aren’t specific to Balanced mod.  so I dont see anything wrong with having a discussion about both simultaneously.

  • TripleA

Balanced mod isn’t even balanced. Axis go hard.

Yeah, for those who dislike BM, just remove those few buyings which include the marines.

  • TripleA

Balanced mod is okay if you like seeing the axis win all the time. The allies get more NOs but the axis get some neat ones as well. The difference is the allies don’t get a juicy 21 ipc bid to take more ground initially, which opens up egypt and the middle east more so for the axis, in which case Russia is dead without air support coming from persia to defend against the german onslaught.

The amount of getting rekt before allied gains are made is increased.

  • TripleA

I will say this. The 3 trans 1 marine buy for BM3 does make j3 india much smoother.  That extra 1 guy makes a huge difference.

Because Japan needs 7 vcs instead of 6 in mod3, it is more difficult to win as west usa is easily defensible. So the play is to go after ANZAC then Hawaii or go to the middle east / africa and bring havoc there.

Japan only needs 7vcs if Berlin is down.

I personally don’t play BM, but from what I have seen in top league games, is that the AXIS get the bid of 3/4.  From everything I have seen people think the game is tilted to the Allies.  Like I said I have zero experience with it, but that is what I have seen.

  • TripleA

That is because BM 3 is new. Think of the additonal NOs to the allies as a really junk bid that goes away when the axis kick open the door.

Russia makes more money round 3 4 5 and dies 6? Cool. UK pacific makes 3 more?  and dies J3 or J4? Cool. Oh you want to retake india and lose it again to Japan? Well thank you for even more money.

Oh and italy actually making money instead of being screwed all game… that is a game changer.

If Russia doesn’t die for the first 12 rounds, all that extra Allied NO money can make a significant difference.  Right now I’d sooner take Allies at no bid in BM3 than I would take Allies in 2nd edition for less than 34 or so (maybe even more).

  • '19 '17 '16

    Yes.

I think a bunch of artillery (7 or 8) bought in Berlin G2 becomes important to take down Moscow G7, or at least threaten it. I’m wondering about buying even more G3 to attack G8 but that doesn’t seem very nice to me. By that time, USA has probably made a landing somewhere, and maybe stuck it.

BTW Cow, you don’t get any plunder for retaking Calcutta or any other capital in BM.

Back to the original question, I think the main decision is if you should buy 2TTs and one IC or 3TTs and something else. I favour the former buy because otherwise China becomes too much of a problem and response to a Soviet invasion becomes easier. The other buys don’t make much sense to me.

and then they say that 2nd edition, and not BM is balanced

Russia rarely dies turn 6 in BM. The combination of some extra money and stronger interceptors making unescorted SBR not really viable is enough to make it live a bit longer.

so we come to the point, that BM maybe isn`t perfectly balanced, but with all the new NOs, Vichy and unites (marines) it seems far more balanced than 2nd edition is.
