Like last week’s shooting I feel the deepest regret for the victim’s families of this fool. People like this should deal with themselves and leave others out of it!!!

    http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071211/ap_on_re_us/church_shootings

This isn’t meant to be political, but why does the whole AP go over and over that the idiot was Home Schooled, and “Deeply Religious”. I was a Home Schooler, and I am Religious, although not to the point of hatred and violence. But they went over that point several times as if to let it stand from the page in larger letters. Is it just me speaking from the position of a Home Schooler and no one else noticed that or did someone else pick this up?

BTW, this guy, is the same as any other idiot shooter, like the dude at the mall last week. Thank God the security officer caught him early and gunned him down…

    GG

  • Yea, I heard about that, sad, what is the world coming to these datys…

This, like the Church shooting, and everything else comes out when we glorify the shooters by giving out their names, talking about their rotten child hoods, etc.

Hence why I think these kids of stories should be limited to their geographic area with MAYBE a 5 second blurb on the national news reports as the last quip before signing off.

  • You cannot stop the press from reporting this Jen, it is unconstitutional. to do so.

  • I don’t think she was meaning via government action, but rather through professional integrity type behavior, or industry ethics within the news business that would stop the “fame” sought by such shooters.

Also, be careful of getting political folks…  This is still GD not PD.

Dunno if reporters have professional ethics anymore.  They used too, back before the 60’s, I think.

Anyway, that was the gist of the idea.  If there was no fame or glory or “horror” awarded to the shooter, then there would be less shooters.  A lot of these kids get it in the minds that they’ll (to quote Billie the Kid) “be famous” afterwards.

  • The biggest problem with you idea Jen is the American Public.

There is a reason that the news business uses “If it bleeds it leads”, because that is what America wants.

    Need more proof?
How about the major success in the 1990’s of the Jerry Springer Show?
How about the popularity of the “train wreck” of American Idol try-outs?

People WANT the gory details, they WANT the horror, they want to be given reason to be outraged.
And most of all they want all the details about the villain they can get, whether it be John Wayne Gacey, Adolph Hitler, or this Officer Peterson with his “missing” 4th wife and dead 3rd wife…

I know.  Doesn’t mean they HAVE to get it.

  • @Cmdr:

I know.  Doesn’t mean they HAVE to get it.

Capitalism my dear… the people get what they WANT, because that means they WATCH, and that means that the ad space sells better.

I hate to say it, but we (as a whole) get EXACTLY what we ask for in this nation, on all fronts (government, TV, live entertainment… you name it, we get what the majority SHOW they want… not what they say, what they DO.)

And that is why, for example, in the immortal words of the musical Avenue Q…
    “The Internet is for porn!”

    Amen to that.

It’s why CNN, FOX News, MSNBC, etc are all skewed hopelessly one way or the other.  it’s what the advertisers want and the advertisers want stories spun in the way the people who watch them want them spun.

There’s no such thing as “free press” anymore.  It’s all bought and paid for by corporate and political machines to achieve their own personal goals.

Guess it’s better then the state run press I had as a little girl though. /sigh.

  • I didn’t hear about the homeschooling thing, but I didn’t read/see much about any of the recent shootings.

I did hear that this particular shooter killed himself and not the security guard, but good on her for trying to stop him.  Probably made a difference.

I don’t think anyone aims to glorify these people.  At best, they try to psychoanalyze the shooter and explain why it may have happened.  That’s why the give details of everything.  I still think the victims receive a lot of attention, but everyone wants to know “why?”

Shootings aren’t anything new, and they always have and always will be a main story in the news.  I agree with Switch - I think everyone has a guilty love of the macabre, something to take them from the doldrums of their daily lives.

  • Its not that the aim is to glorify the shooters, but that by giving them such attention, they are famous, and probably glorified in their own minds. Keep in mind that to be a shooter of this sort anyway, you must have some slightly off-kilter views on this world. So they don’t think they will be honored as heroes, but thats not what they are after. They get what they want when the media airs their stories in detail and delves into their personal life. Perhaps they feel vindication from that knowledge, before they die. I agree with Jen here. Stop spreading details of the shooter and his life, and only perhaps focus on the tragedy and memorials to the fallen.

  • on the point of the press bius, i noticed in one of the articals i read from the AP that the story was prity good untell the end. when it talked about the security guard, it got into how she was an ex-cop who was fired. no need for exacts, but it bothers me that our hero who saved lifes (even if she didn’t pull the triger on the last shot that killed the guy, she did put a few in him to stop him) had to have dirt dug up on her on the vary same day as the shoting.
it wasn’t vital to the story in any way, all it did was make the hero look like she wasn’t as good of a “good guy” as we thought.

i agree with Jen also that it would be nice to see responcible reporting from the reporters. but unfortunutlly people want to see this stuff. i’m a father, i like to know when there is a school shooting, it makes me pay attention and i hope makes other parents as well so the same dosn’t happen at other schools, or atleast it is lessened.

  • I will generally agree that in the US folks get what they want; except they often are not being told the truth about what they are buying.  I can’t explain without taking this political so suffice it to say the politicians are lying whenever they sell us a new program.

Which part made you laugh, DF?  The comment, or the fact that Jenn and Switch actually AGREED on something?!

I have an odd sense of humor, I see funny things where most people don’t.

I have to say Switch and Jenn agreeing makes my heart warm.  The fact that internet porn is involved makes me laugh and laugh… :-D

What’s also agreeable is that porn makes things warm as well.

    Happy holidays!
