• I don’t get this from the manual, P.16:

    "Each attacking submarine conducting a Surprise Strike
    attack rolls one die.  After the attacking player has rolled for
    all attacking submarines, the defender chooses one sea unit
    for each hit scored and moves it behind the casualty strip.

    Then each defending submarine conducting a Surprise
    Strike attack rolls one die. Defending submarines that roll a
    “1” score a hit. After the defending player has rolled for all
    defending submarines, the attacker chooses one sea unit for
    each hit scored and removes it from play."

    So if attacked with subs (Surprise Strike) the defender gets to move his units behind the casualty strip, thus allowing him to fire back once? But if the defending sub hits during Surprise Strike, the attacker must remove something before it even gets a chance to fire.  I don’t get this. The attacking sub has no advantage at all then in a Surprise Strike, since subs attack at “2” and fire first anyway on the battlestrip.


  • I think the advantage is that he has more chance to hit: 2 vs 1.
    He could choose the Sub that has already fired.


  • The submarine rules are continued on page 17.

    “Once all attacking and defending submarines that conduct a Surprise Strike attack have fired, the casualties they have generated are removed from the game and this step (step 2) is over for this round of combat.”

    Basically, the only units that get to defend from Surprise Strike are submarines.
