I’m not used to playing without the odds calc. I also didn’t consider (with all my battles) the consequences of losing. France and Bulgaria captured on turn 1 is game over for Germany.
I resign. Restart.

One quick change: 1 of the tanks from Poland go to France instead, i.e. remove 1 tank from Baltic States and add to France.
For what I’m trying, this was much better setup and the results were more predictable. SZ 9 was not quite a sure thing but the odds felt in my favor, and that kills off one transport that can reach France.
Then East Poland was pretty much a sure thing as well preventing advancement into Poland and Bulgaria. I’m spread thin now but I have a transport protected.
Egypt really sucked but that was a gamble, which I’m now reconsidering.
-
Darn, I shoulda played this out against the “computer” a few times first. I think Egypt is a distraction. Thoughts?
-
Okay, I have a much better opening. Last time I swear.
-
Ugh, now I feel like the dice favored me a bit in that round. The overall outcome would’ve been the same no matter what but maybe I should have like one less sub or infantry.
I propose removing 1 inf from Baltic and/or a sub from SZ 6 or SZ 9. Thoughts?
-
First.
This may “shock” you, but I never use odds calculators. EVER.
Only recently, on occassion, have I even reviewed the built in tripleA calc, Â which can be INCREDIBLY misleading, and which I wouldn’t consider even remotely accurate.
The simple fact being, Â that even though say, I attack with 10 infantry @1, and you defend with 5 infantry @2, and we have the same attack power, because I physically roll more dice than you, my odds are considerably higher. Â And the swing of which can be crazier to account for too, as I could possibly roll 10 hits, to a maximum of your 5.
Too many players rely on the calculators, which I would agree can be helpful online, but never occur face to face.
You’ve got to learn how to go with your gut. Â I’ll teach you via PM, some of the tricks I use, because I don’t want them to be public. Â BUT BE WARNED, Â I am a bit of an impulsive gambler with my play style, which is why I’m better suited to play the allies. :P
As for EGYPT in this game. Â I think it’s a MUST. Â In all the renditions from original to anniversary, I always play the same basic strategy.
Focus on the economic win.
By using Japan and Germany (and italy in AA50) Â to spend thier efforts mostly focused on British units, and british territories, Britian becomes bankrupt rather quickly… Â and as they starve out, essentially their country joins your aligment economically.
Take a good look at the board, Â and look at your starting incomes, your NO’s, and your enemies. Â Then make a map of what you have to achieve in capture, to par your opponent economically. Â You’ll be surprised how you can actually defeat your opponent without a capital gamble, and how if you pay attention to thier NO’s, you can edge them.

Okay, I’m starting to realize that Egypt/Africa is worthless when the bid has anything extra in Egypt. It’s a long term losing battle when those units can be used elsewhere in Europe.
Here’s why I like this opening. It’s an aggressive push to Baltic toward Karelia but it’s also conservative. If things go badly, I have enough unused units to protect France and Bulgaria so that all is not lost. It could be a bit tight in France is SZ9 goes poorly. But since I’m pulling out of Egypt anyway I bring up the tank and inf from Libya to help out and maybe sacrifice the transport to do that. Then there’s the Czech tank that I left behind, just in case as well.
Next, I abandon Africa but do it in such a way to preserve the German transport 1 more round.
Anyway, I like this opening but if you want to chop out an inf or a sub somewhere to balance the maybe better than average rolls. I’m game for that.
-
I want to do something different with Japan too. In the past I’m able to expand fast but not put enough pressure on Russia in time. I have one really nuts idea but not sure about it yet.
-
Well go all out!
And Dice rolls stay as is. :P That’s Axis and Allies!
