Transports transports transport questions

  • I should not hijack the threads of others so here i go.

1 a transport can start in the carolines pick up one infantry there, move towards japan pick up another, enter the japanese sea zone and drop both in korea?

2 could a transport carrying two infantry drop one in both korea and japan?

3 a transport moving unescorted over an enemy sub does get fired upon?

4 if a japanese transport is sitting alone off java and the british move their battleship and a loaded transport in to do an amphibious landing the british player’s battleship can choose to either ignore the japanese transport and conduct bombardment or destroy the transport but not both?

I will come up with more transport questions for sure.  Thanks for answering any twice

  • 1 Yes

2 No - once a transport unloads, its turn is over, so you may only unload into a single territroy.

3 Yes - unescorted by a surface warship, that is.  The sub gets a shot at 2 or less.

4 Yes - you may ignore the transport to get your bombardment, or start a battle to sink it, just not both.

I am pretty sure the answer to number 3 is NO.

Do not the rules state that when passing through sea zones with enemy subs, you should count those zones as friendly. Providing the sub is submerged. Which, as I understand it, they almost always are.

I don’t think the sub gets to shoot at your transport… I mean why would it. The transport can’t defend, so it would be an automatic loss.

    HA!
I have been wondering about this. Sub should be able to attack transport, But if sub misses, transport should be able to escape. I dont believe there should be automatic losses in this game. Everything in the outcome in a AA game is ultimatly based on die outcome(odds). I think even thou transports have no attack or defense value, this theme needs to be maintained.

  • The answer to No. 3 is yes.

    From the Europe 1940 rulebook, p. 30:

“A submarine can attack any transport that moves into or through its sea zone unaccompanied by surface warships. in either combat or noncombat movement. Each sub fires once…”

Does it fire at 1? or 2?

Considered an attack? or a Defence?

  • It is a one time attack at 2 for each sub present during combat or non combat phases. I think people must have complained about transports alone ignoring subs. The rule is found under the description of subs I believe in the unit section of both Pacific and Europe I believe.

  • I think there is no Need to Roll the dice b/c Transports w/o escortships are automaticly destroyed…

  • No there is a need to roll dice, as subs are ignored and do not result in combat on their enemies turn unless the enemy ship is an unescorted transport. Then the sub gets one shot to try to sink it outside of normal combat, this shot occurs as the transport moves in or through the zone. It is listed separately in the rules and I did not know about it for the longest time in pacific until I read the sub section in the rulebook. Attacking transports are never defenseless as they can always retreat. However this is not an attack, this shot occurs during movement of any type.

See page 30 AAE40 submarine section under: “Doesn’t Block Enemy Movement” line 9 beginning with “There is an exception…”
