• Since there’s been some talk about restructuring and updating the strategy section. I might as well include some strategies just to get started. I posted these before, but they were sort of in different threads that were way off topic. Here’s for easy access.

    Moses’ Masterpiece #5: USA!
Here are my thoughts on the general American strategy I tend to use. Beside each turn I’ve included a number of notes to help you when executing this strategy. Strategy is based on standard A&A rules with the exception of Russia Restricted and Submerging.

    1. USA (36 IPCs)
    Buy 3 Transports, 4 Inf.
Non-Combat Move: Transport w/ 2 inf., bomber, and 1 ftr to Britain from EUSA. 1 ftr from WUSA to Eastern Canada. Unload transport to Britain.
    Remaining IPCs: 0
    Income: 34 IPCs
Total: 4 Transports, 6 Inf., 1 ARM (based on troops in EUSA)
Notes: As you can see USA doesn’t have any offensives on the first turn. Being conservative with USA on the first turn allows for USA to be more aggressive in later turns. Also by pulling your aircraft from USA, there’s no way of successfully counter attack against Japan. This means that Japan is free to take Hawaii, New Zealand, and Australia with the bulk of its Navy. In fact a great way to disrupt this strategy is for Japan to take Alaska or at least threaten WUSA. Income of 34 IPCs is based on Japan taking East China.

    2. USA (34 IPCs)
    Buy: 2 Transports, 6 inf
Combat move: Land 4 Transports w/ 6 inf. and 1 ARM to Algeria (3 from EUSA, 1 from Britain). Strategic bomb Germany.
Non-Combat Move: Move bomber back to Britain. Move ftr. From E. Canada to Britain.
    Remaining IPCs: 0
    Income: 32 IPCs
Total: 6 Transports, 6 inf. (based on all existing transports)
Notes: If there is any better way to land that many men in N. Africa on the second turn, then I’m all ears. To prepare against a possible counterattack from the Luftwaffe on T3, USA must have full cooperation from UK by getting that power to move it’s carrier w/ 2 ftrs to protect America’s transport fleet off Spain. Income of 32 IPCs is based on Japan taking Hawaii and West China on T2.

    3. USA (32 IPCs)
    Buy: 1 Transport, 8 inf
Combat move: Strategic bomb Germany. Move into Libya and both French Africa’s.
Non-Combat Move: Move all transports back to EUSA. Move bomber to Britain.
    Remaining IPCs: 0
    Income: 33 IPCs
    Total: 7 Transports, 14 inf.
Notes: Depending on the strength of the German presence, you may want to refrain from these attacks and instead just try to take Libya. If you find that the German may be too powerful to handle even with 6 inf., 1 ARM, you may consider moving the 2 ftrs and 1 bomber from Britain to Algeria or even hold off on the Normandy Invasion for a turn.

    4. USA (33 IPCs)
    Buy: 11 inf.
Combat move: Land in Western Europe with 7 loaded Transports supported by 2 ftrs and 1 Bomber. Move further into Africa.
Non-Combat Move: Move bombers and 2 ftrs back to Britain or Africa.
    Remaining IPCs: 0
    Income: 39 IPCs
    Total: 7 Transports, 11 inf.
Notes: Finally D-Day on T4! Usually America will be able to take Western Europe upwards of 6 German inf. and 4 ftrs. However, expect huge losses at WE and the possible counter attack of Germany on T5. You can soften the blow by letting UK land first at WE (they should have a pretty sizeable transport force by now) or later after the Germans have successfully counterattacked. At any point Germany will have to spend a sizable amount of manpower to protect its Western flank. Also this is one of the only turns where I will allow America to make a different purchase like a bomber or ftr. It all depends on how many more inf. are needed in Europe or Africa.

    5. USA (39 IPCs)
    Buy: 1 IC, 1 transport, 5 inf.
Combat Move: Strategic bomb Germany. Push further into Africa.
Non-Combat Move: Move transports back to EUSA. Move bomber back to Britain/Africa.
    Remaining IPCs: 0
    Income: 39 IPCs
Total: 8 transports, 16 inf, place IC in Western Europe.
Notes: Another slow turn of building up, but what do you expect from a country half an ocean away from the battlefront? Anyways, you should be able to split transports into two groups: one headed to Russia/Africa or WE. The Luftwaffe shouldn’t be much more of a threat anymore. If Germany is strong enough to take WE back, then purchase a bomber or a transport w/ 2 inf. At any point Germany should fall soon and you can start transferring forces to Africa or Russia to deal with Japan. This is where the IC in WE and SE comes in handy. I would advise beating Japan through Europe since Japan still has its Navy up to this point.

Well I think a 5-turn strategy is the most anybody can expect. A lot of these purchases aren’t written in stone so change your tactics accordingly if Japan makes a bid for America, Japan sends it’s Navy around the tip of South America, Russia itself is in imminent danger against Japan, or if Germany is particular strong in Africa. I find this strategy very sound though tedious and boring at times just build transports and infantry. I tired using ARM but it’s particular hard to transport a sizeable force across the Atlantic. It requires pin-point coordination from the Allies, Britain with its Navy and Russia skilled in holding off Japan and pressuring Germany.

  • Moses’ Masterpiece #6
This is my standard UK strategy that I like use when I’m looking for Germany First and Japan Later. Obviously it’s based highly on the actions that USA and USSR performs, so make sure your player(s) know that this is a joint game. I’m not very happy with it, since there’s not much creativity or ATB, but it’s a good game winner.

    1. UK (30 IPCs)
Buy: 1 Aircraft Carrier (AC), 1 Transport (Trans), 1 Infantry (Inf)

    Combat-Move:
1 Bomber (BR) from United Kingdom (UK) to Strategic Bombing Raid (SBR) Germany

    Non-Combat Move:
Return BR to UK. Move 1 Trans from India to pick up 1 Inf from Syria-Iraq and unload in India. Move 2 Fighters (Ftr) from United Kingdom to Karelia. Move 1 Inf from W. Canada to E. Canada.

    Remaining IPCs: 1
    Income: 26 IPCs
Placement: 1 Trans, 1 AC to North Sea. 1 Inf to UK
Total: 3 Inf, 1 Armor (ARM), 1 BR, 1 Trans, 1 AC (based on troops in UK)
Notes: As you can see, I haven’t made very many attacks with UK. Reason being is that I only play against veteran opponents, and any smart German should have destroyed the UK Navy (all of it) on the first turn. I am also expecting that Egypt will have fallen. If not, then transport 1 Inf from Egypt along with 1 Inf from Syria-Iraq to India, and retreat 1 ARM to South Africa. 26 IPCs is based on Germany taking Egypt and French West and Equatorial Africa.

    1. UK (27 IPCs)
      Buy: 6 Inf

    Combat-Move:
1 BR from UK to SBR Germany

    Non-Combat Move:
Return BR to UK. Move 1 AC and 1 Trans (pick up Inf from E. Canada en route) from N. Sea to NE Atlantic.

    Remain IPCs: 9
    Income: 22 IPCs
    Placement: 6 Inf to UK
    Total: 9 Inf, 1 ARM, 1 BR
Notes: Another turn where UK hardly attacks or conducts any actions. The big move here is to be sure you move that AC to NE Atlantic. This way, you can provide escort service for the America force due to arrive here Turn (T) 2. Otherwise those US Trans are sitting ducks. 22 IPCs is based on Germany taking Italian East Africa, Belgian Congo, Kenya, and Syria-Iraq. I don’t factor in German SBRs, since it is smarter to hit USSR with SBRs.

    1. UK (31 IPCs)
      Buy: 3 Trans

    Combat-Move:
1 BR from UK to SBR Germany

    Non-Combat Move:
Return BR to UK. Move 1 AC and 1 Trans from NE Atlantic to N. Sea. Unload Trans to UK. Move 2 UK ftrs from Karelia to AC.

    Remain IPCs: 7
    Income: 17 IPCs
Placement: 3 Trans to N. Sea
    Total: 9 Inf, 2 ARM, 1 BR, 2 ftrs, 4 Trans, 1 AC
Notes: And yet another turn of buildup. The only attack I made so far was the standard SBR on Germany. IPC count is based on Germany taking South Africa and Japan taking India

    1. UK (24 IPCs)
      Buy: 8 Inf.

    Combat Move:
Unload 4 Trans (each loaded with 2 Inf) to Western Europe supported by 2 ftrs and 1 Bomber.

    Non-Combat Move:
Move BR and ftrs back to Britain or Africa (depending on where they are needed)

    Remaining IPCs: 0
    Income: 17 IPCs
    Placement: 8 Inf to UK
    Total: 9 Inf, 2 ARM, 1 BR, 2 ftrs, 4 Trans, 1 AC
Notes: D-Day for UK on T4! As you can see, this isn’t much of an invasion. I merely make this move to inflict as much German causalities as I can, before the larger American force arrives later on in T4. Basically, attack until the last man and then retreat with your BR and ftrs still intact. If you are still unsure, attack only until Germany has upwards 6 of inf and 4 ftrs still in W Europe. If you see Western Europe only partially defend, instead shift forces to Eastern Europe to help the Russians. IPC count is based on Japan taking Australia, but USA liberating both French Africas.

    1. UK (17 IPCs)
      Buy: 5 Inf

    Combat Move:
1 BR from UK to SBR Germany

    Non-Combat Move:
Return BR to UK. Land 2 ftrs to W Europe (If able). Unload 4 Trans to W Europe or E Europe (depending on where they are needed).

    Remaining IPCs: 2 IPCs
    Income: 17 IPCs
    Placement: 5 Inf to UK
    Total: 6 Inf, 2 ARM, 1 BR, 2 ftrs, 4 Trans, 1 AC
Notes: More of a clean up phase after D-Day. Usually Germany will have retaken W Europe but at heavy causalities. If you’re pretty sure of it, you can invade W Europe again! If the USA manages to hold, then send forces to reinforce their positions against a possible counter attack. If Germany has taken W Europe by force, ferry forces to Eastern Europe.

  • Here I have a slightly modified strategy I use for UK. This depends if I want more forces at D-Day for UK and if I can hold Western Europe. It mostly sticks to the case scenario from above but utilizes and extra Transport. Use whatever strategy you think suits you best.

    1. UK (30 IPCs)
Buy: 1 Aircraft Carrier (AC), 1 Transport (Trans), 1 Infantry (Inf)

    Combat-Move:
1 Bomber (BR) from United Kingdom (UK) to Strategic Bombing Raid (SBR) Germany

    Non-Combat Move:
Return BR to UK. Move 1 Trans from India to pick up 1 Inf from Syria-Iraq and unload in India. Move 2 Fighters (Ftr) from United Kingdom to Karelia. Move 1 Inf from W. Canada to E. Canada.

    Remaining IPCs: 1
    Income: 26 IPCs
Placement: 1 Trans, 1 AC to North Sea. 1 Inf to UK
Total: 3 Inf, 1 Armor (ARM), 1 BR, 1 Trans, 1 AC (based on troops in UK)

    1. UK (27 IPCs)
      Buy: 5 Inf

    Combat-Move:
1 BR from UK to SBR Germany

    Non-Combat Move:
Return BR to UK. Move 1 AC and 1 Trans (pick up Inf from E. Canada en route) from N. Sea to NE Atlantic.

    Remain IPCs: 12
    Income: 22 IPCs
    Placement: 5 Inf to UK
    Total: 8 Inf, 1 ARM, 1 BR

    1. UK (34 IPCs)
      Buy: 4 Trans

    Combat-Move:
1 BR from UK to SBR Germany

    Non-Combat Move:
Return BR to UK. Move 1 AC and 1 Trans from NE Atlantic to N. Sea. Unload Trans to UK. Move 2 UK ftrs from Karelia to AC.

    Remain IPCs: 2
    Income: 17 IPCs
Placement: 4 Trans to N. Sea
    Total: 9 Inf, 2 ARM, 1 BR, 2 ftrs, 5 Trans, 1 AC

    1. UK (19 IPCs)
      Buy: 6 Inf.

    Combat Move:
Unload 5 Trans (each loaded with 2 Inf, except one with 1 ARM or Inf) to Western Europe supported by 2 ftrs and 1 Bomber.

    Non-Combat Move:
Move BR and ftrs back to Britain or Africa (depending on where they are needed)

    Remaining IPCs: 1
    Income: 17 IPCs
    Placement: 6 Inf to UK
    Total: 7 Inf, 1 ARM, 1 BR, 2 ftrs, 5 Trans, 1 AC

    1. UK (18 IPCs)
      Buy: 6 Inf

    Combat Move:
1 BR from UK to SBR Germany

    Non-Combat Move:
Return BR to UK. Land 2 ftrs to W Europe (If able). Unload 5 Trans to W Europe or E Europe (depending on where they are needed).

    Remaining IPCs: 0 IPCs
    Income: 23 IPCs
    Placement: 6 Inf to UK
    Total: 6 Inf, 1 BR, 2 ftrs, 5 Trans, 1 AC

  • Last Words: I hope this helps. I won’t go longer than 5 turns since you should know by then what to do. Now there are a number of inconsistencies in this strategy (like how much of Africa Germany takes or Japan going for India T1), but hopefully I was able to keep everything pretty standard to the best of my knowledge. If you have any questions, comments, clarifications, or corrections, please feel free to reply.

  • Thanks for takin the time to write all that TG! Well, they certainly beat the official strategies posted on the site…they’re not THAT much good to me though, because I don’t play standard Axis and Allies much anymore. I play a lot of games with a lot of rule changes or variations. (such as that US vs USSR).

Being Canadian, I felt that I had to have a Canadian team in axis and allies . While not really historically accurate-Canada being a major world power in world war 2-I thought it would be kinda cool. So I printed out a bunch of miniature canadian flags, and glued them each onto a small cardboard circle, so that’s their country marker. I made their capital eastern Canada, and I put a large Canadian flag there, indicating their capital. Basically there’s no more UK team. Eastern Canada is now worth 8, and UK is worth 3. Canada uses UK’s units, obviously. At the moment, I’m playing a USA and Canada vs. Russia and Japan game. Just started round 4, it’s pretty fun so far…LOTS of naval battles!

  • plots ways to up his post count like Moses

Good Strategies, but remember Germany and Japan can be unpredictable. Japan could attack Brazil and the American Transports.

  • Well Chris, I play with a lot of different rules too. Hidden Submarines, Paratroopers, 2-bit battleships, A&A: Europe style Strategic Bombing, it’s all there and a bag of chips. In fact, I even helped rewrite a total overhaul of the game called Axis and Allies Diplomacy Style (it’s exactly as the game mentions), Axis and Allies World Domination Mode (again, exactly what it implies), and Drunken Axis and Allies Master (need I say more?). And then there are a few dozen historical scenarios, like 1943 and Patton’s Ride to Glory. These variants and conversion are great at providing a much-needed break after you had enough of playing the game umpteenth times.

  • Yeah, I guess a lot of people are forgetting how much of a role Canada played in the war. Sicily, the D-Day Invasion, the Navy (don’t disrespect Canada’s Navy!), Italy, Canada played a role in them all. I also tried to get China involved in the war (it was also a major player), but it’s really hard against the dominant Japanese air force. I’ve made a scenario to shift the time period to 1937 and 1939 to give China a better chance (don’t want to unbalance things too much), and expanding China to other Asian territories. To make up the difference, I made the islands worth a lot more (for instance Hawaii is now worth an amazing 6!), so we do see many more great Naval Battles between USA and Japan. USA starts of neutral, but since Japan really needs to take those islands, they have to surprise attack and bring the “Sleeping Giant” into the war.

  • Yanny, like I mentioned in the notes for the America strategy, a good way to really make times tough for USA and screw up their timetable is if Japan makes an attempt of trying to take territories such as Brazil and USA. Now generally, I don’t see this happening, and I planned my strategies according to what I’m use to. Remember, every strategy has its flaws! As Rommel once said, “A battle plan never survives contact with the enemy.”

  • True, but, in your strategy, your fairly defenseless vs a Japaneese strike in the Atlantic. In fact, a South African IC could take America out for 3 or 4 turns.

  • A short aside-
Y, I never really paid that much attention to the # of posts until today.
Are all posts made in the same visit given the same post #? All of yours and TGM VI’s have the same # don’t they?
    –-------------------------------------------------------------
    “Just makes you go ‘Hmmmmmm.’”

  • TGM VI, grat werk.
    –-------------------------------------------------------------
“I hate that. I hate it when that happens!”

  • Yanny, can you explain to me how South African IC could take America out for 3 or 4 turns? I would think there’s no reason for one and a better IC (a even then I won’t
“waste” 15 IPCs for Japan) placement might be Egypt.

  • Xi, thanks for the input!

I think my next masterpiece will be on Russia. It’ll take awhile. But I can’t wait to get the “trilogy” down on paper.

  • A South African IC is one of the better options for Japan, to make use of their extra navy while diverting as little forces as possible from the push on Russia. Yanny can correct me if he’s talking about something else, but you can swing around South America very early and tie up the US in the Atlantic for a few turns with a pretty large navy operating out of South Africa. I believe he’s saying your strategy is overly susceptible to it.

  • Constructive criticism: The theory behind the strategy is sound, but the execution is extrememly inefficient. You basically aren’t doing anything with the US on Turns 1,3, and 5!

Another slow turn of building up, but what do you expect from a country half an ocean away from the battlefront? "

Doesn’t that go against the very heart of your ATB strategy - doing as much as possible in as little time as possible?

This goes back to the initial conversation I was having with TM about the inefficient US play she was playing against - by delaying one turn and using Eastern Canada as your staging ground instead, you will be bringing troops to the Front each and every turn. Every turn you send transports back to the US East Coast is a wasted turn by the most powerful country in the game.

Instead of focusing on some of the specific tactical problems above, let’s zoom out and look at the overall strategy:

Basically, you are transporting 20 Infantry and 1 Armor to the Western Front in 5 Turns. At the end of turn 5 you have 8 transports in Eastern US ready to transport 16 infantry. That means on Turn 6 you will have transported 16 more, then, on Turn 7 you will have to go back to Eastern US and deliver more on Turn 8. Delivering troops every other turn, just like TM was talking about.

You can and should be delivering troops with the US on EVERY TURN, either to Norway, Western Europe, or Algeria. Buy Turn 5, it will be at least 10 infantry a turn.

Turns 1-7, you are basically transporting the following: 2,8,0,14,0,16,0

When you could deliver: 2,4,6,8,10,10,10,12 etc

Give me some time to work it out on paper and I will post it for you.

  • Ok, below is an example of working from Eastern Canada, which is a much more efficient way to transport troops - I put it in quotes so that it is easier to read the whole thing. This is only meant to show the overall strategy, not be a specific turn-for-turn build, so for simplicity’s sake I have made two assumptions:

1.) Everything is being dropped of in a friendly Ireland, just to show total numbers. In reality, the troops would either be going to Norway, Western Europe, or Algeria based on the specific tactical situation of each turn.

2.) Japan is not going to inturrupt this supply chain. Of couse a good Japanese player will, but covering those responses is a completely different topic. Suffice it to say that the US should deal with the Japanese interference with as little disruption to the strategy below as possible.

    1. USA (36 IPCs)
    Buy 12 Infantry.
    Move Armor to Eastern Canada
US Transport - 2 Infantry to Ireland
    Remaining IPCs: 0
    Income: 34 IPCs
Total Troops in Ireland: 2 Infantry
Total Troops in Eastern Canada: 1 Armor
Total Troops in Eastern US: 12 Infantry
    North Sea: 1 Transport
    US East Coast: nothing

    2. USA (34 IPCs)
    Buy: 2 Transports, 6 infantry
Move 12 infantry from Eastern US to Eastern Canada
North Sea Transport - 1 Armor to Ireland
    Remaining IPCs: 0
    Income: 32 IPCs
Total Troops in Ireland: 2 Infantry, 1 Armor
Total Troops in Eastern Canada: 12 Infantry
Total Troops in Eastern US: 6 Infantry
    North Sea: 1 Transport
    US East Coast: 2 Transports

    3. USA (32 IPCs)
    Buy: 1 Transport, 8 Infantry
NS Transport - 2 Infantry from Eastern Canada to Ireland
US Transports - 4 Infantry from Eastern US to Ireland
Move 2 Infantry from Eastern US to Eastern Canada
    Remaining IPCs: 0
    Income: 32 IPCs
Total Troops in Ireland: 8 Infantry, 1 Armor
Total Troops in Eastern Canada: 12 Infantry
Total Troops in Eastern US: 8 Infantry
    North Sea: 3 Transports
    US East Coast: 1 Transport

    4. USA (32 IPCs)
    Buy: 1 Transport, 8 Infantry
NS Transports - 6 Infantry from Eastern Canada to Ireland
US Transport - 2 Infantry from Eastern US to Ireland
Move 6 Infantry to Eastern Canada
    Remaining IPCs: 0
    Income: 32 IPCs
Total Troops in Ireland: 16 Infantry, 1 Armor
Total Troops in Eastern Canada: 12 Infantry
Total Troops in Eastern US: 8 Infantry
    North Sea: 4 Transports
    US East Coast: 1 Transport

    5. USA (32 IPCs)
    Buy: 10 infantry
NS Transports - 8 Infantry from Eastern Canada to Ireland
US Transport – 2 Infantry from Eastern US to Ireland
Move 6 Infantry to Eastern Canada
    Remaining IPCs: 2
    Income: 32 IPCs
Total Troops in Ireland: 26 Infantry, 1 Armor
Total Troops in Eastern Canada: 10 Infantry
Total Troops in Eastern US: 10 Infantry
    North Sea: 5 Transports
    US East Coast: nothing

    6. USA (34 IPCs)
    Buy: 10 infantry
Transport 10 Infantry from Eastern Canada to Ireland
Move 10 Infantry to Eastern Canada
    Remaining IPCs: 4
    Income: 32 IPCs
Total Troops in Ireland: 36 Infantry, 1 Armor
Total Troops in Eastern Canada: 10 Infantry
Total Troops in Eastern US: 10 Infantry
    North Sea: 5 Transports
    US East Coast: nothing

    Repeat Turn 6

Now, this isn’t perfect but you get the idea. Ignore the tactical specifics of each turn and think of this as a generic template, then change the strategy to that of your own - hitting Algeria on US2 and Western Europe on US4 with big waves. You can shuffle around the transport buys and get different numbers of troops over to the Western Theater on different turns.

Also, you still don’t have to transport troops every turn if you just want to hit with a giant wave, but working from Eastern Canada will give you the option - which you currently don’t have. Plus you will be able to follow up a big landing with more reinforcements the next turn instead of just sending them back to the US East Coast.

    –---------------------------------------

The short version of all this is that if you get your troops to Eastern Canada and deploy from there, you can hit somewhere every turn.

Also, for those of you who are unfamiliar with the Infantry Push on Germany strategy, UK can follow a similar strategy with smaller amounts of infantry and transports. Tag along with the US troops, and send everything along the following route: Norway -> Karelia -> Eastern Europe -> Germany. Unless you are playing with rules to help out the Axis like bidding, you can win 90% of your games this way. It will take a while if Germany is smart and builds mostly infantry, but if they buy too many tanks or send too much to Africa they will fall like a house of cards.

    Your strategy for US sucks@Q@
You suck! America sucks! i will kill you like adolf hitler! –---- Osoma!!!

  • Nice - that’s the first dumbass kiddie-post I’ve seen in this forum - until now I thought we were all mature. I’m hoping Yanny can delete crap like this?

Thanks for your intelligent contribution to the discussion.
