• Bought this game last week and we’ve been wondering about bombers vs infantry ever since. Can someone clarify if when strategic bombers attack a province (not a facility in an sb raid) thats defended by infantry the infantry get to roll for 2 in defense and hit the bombers. Thats they way we play and it seems to be the rule but its not actually stated anywhere and it just seems ridiculous. A group of rifle wielding infantrymen can shoot down bombers?

This means infantry kills fighters with a role of two wheras fighters are only worth one extra on the dice (or +2 for bombers). Seems pretty heavily distorted towards the infantry.

    Thanks.

  • Your playing it right; they defend on a 2.

Its not just a bunch of guys with just rifles. The Infantry piece represents more like an Infantry Division, which could contain Anti-Aircraft units of about battalion strength.

  • Thanks for clarifying that. Obviously the infantry represents more then just men but doesnt make it any less annoying to see the liitle plastic man kill all your little plastic, and expensive, bombers .

  • Whenever stuff like this comes up you just have to remind yourself, “it’s a boardgame.”

Yup. Doesn’t make much sense as well for planes to blast whole armies but it’s only a game ;)

  • Also note, that there are probably buildings, foxholes, and trenches that the infantry are more than likely in. Most of them aren’t probably gonna be out in a wide open field when defending.

  • Don’t forget the movie Pearl Harbour where a guy in a tower shoots down a plane with a gun…

    Good point, good point

Whenever I have 1 defending infantry against 1 inf., 1 art. and 2 fighters, I need only channel Cuba Gooding Jr. to hold the territory…

  • It makes perfect sense. Infantry divisions have anti-air artillery within them. A great part of the tactics in the game involve protecting your expensive units with cheap, expendable infantry. Plus, its usually a bad idea to kill the defenders of a space unless you have troops to occupy it. This tactic perhaps represents “pinning down” the infantry with other infantry, and then killing them with the planes.

Which sadly is the exact opposite of reality but again, it is only a game and one the is charmingly simple if sometimes vague enough to irk us.

I agree with this. Far less realistic for an aircraft unit to destroy an infantry unit, than for an infantry unit to destroy an aircraft unit.

But, It’s a game, not a training simulation for supreme allied commander candidates, or is it?

    Post 100 !!!

Especially if the air unit are bombers (like in the above example) where extremely lethal air defense assets would just cause them to adjust altitude / abort and fight another day.
