Black is what they are meant to be... I hate this as well.

I prefer grey green myself.

Well, at least it's one step towards my ideal monochrome Axis colour scheme:

Germany - black
Italy - grey
Japan - white

I can't quite believe they went for ANOTHER earthy colour for Italy, effectively it means that 5/6 nations look similar in colour, including 4 shades of brown.  And this on a map consisting largely of earthen shades of brown and green...

I haven't seen the pieces or the map itself, but from the pictures, it was NOT difficult at all to tell the Nation Colors apart. 

I do agree with the Earthly look of the Map.  I thought A&A:R was devoid of detail, but this is going a little overboard.  I had to strain to see the territorial boarders in Europe.  Maybe they could've adopted the gradual shader effect seen in the China territories?  In any case, I thought the original A&A map was perfect in this regard.

I have to agree that the original map is very well done. My personal favorite though has to be the European map.
