RE: G1 all fleet buys.
It does to a certain extent, but if you can hold EE on that G1 (which is perfectly viable) and then on G2 start your infantry buys, and play defensive, Russia will get increasingly weaker … because no help will get there until US4 at least … too little, and too late … I will try it this week end … see how it works, I’ll tell you all about it

RE: My turn 1 strats seem different than all the others….
You will change your mind in regards to oppenings as time goes on … these oppening you state are not all that good, but it would be silly of me to try and explain … you will learn why … the hard way

G1 all fleet buys.
What are your thoughts on the following:
In a RR game, with at least a 6IPC bid for axis, would you consider it to be viable to purchase 1 Battleship, and 1 Transport on G1.
Combat: Place bid in Lybia, attack Egypt with 3 inf 1 Tank. Atack UK Battleship off Gibraltar with Italian fleet. Attack UK sub with Bomber. Attack Brittish fleet in North sea with 2 subs and 5 ftrs.
Non Combat: Move all units to EE + transport 2 inf from Norway to EE.
Place Battleship and Transport on Baltic.
I presume that this start acomplishes 2 things, first, it brings another dimension to the game, and second, terribly delays help brought to Russia.
Needless to say that on G2 you will have to move everything back to Germany, but this certainly threatens UK and forces UK to risk its initial airforce, and fear invasion.

RE: The perfect country for the newbe
I can see your point, and for a 5 player game, and a newbie that already knows the basics, I am begining to think you are right … USA has a world to save and is pretty tricky come to think of it.
However, what I meant with a Russia - Germany conflict (and this is how I have tought some fellow spaniards  ) is that with Germany, the soon-to-be-absorbed-into-the-game victim, has to be able to see how Land Air and See move and fight, what the economy is all about, and some basic thinking of how to resolve easy problems (of course, the “teacher” has to play to win). There is only one front, and this helps the newb concentrate on a simple task.
I belive that a newbie can become overwhelmed and discouraged if he sees too many things to think about, too many units and too many decissions to take.
First time I saw the game I thought "I will never learn … "

RE: The perfect country for the newbe
Give a newbie the USA and do a Germany First strategy.
But if you want to teach someone how to play, from zero, i think the best way is to play a two country war as a first game … Germany (for the Newb) vs USSR (for the not-so-newb)

RE: How to protect German Med. Fleet?
It is a waste of time, neurons and money to try to protect the German fleet, try to keep it alive, of course, but don’t let it overshadow your main objective … creating a strong Europe until Japan comes to help.
Africa is important, but not that much, so don’t shuck too many men there.
Once the fleet is threatened beyond hope, try to move it through the Suez canal … go to Madagascar … round South Africa … and with a bit of luck, you might even reach Brazil … alternitavely hope to damage the RAF as much as possible before you go down.

RE: The German Mediterranean fleet (allied view point)
That is exactly my point.
Regardless of bids, the idea is to keep inducing Germany to ship troops to Africa, and support them with aircraft. The Allied pressence there has to be enough to hold, but not to the extent of making the German player think Africa is lost (ie 4 - 6 US infantry a turn). The Germans have to think every turn, that Africa is retakable, so that they keep on investing in an African Campaign.
After all, the whole idea of the Western Allies is taking preassure off Russia, and this approach manages, in my view, to achieve this end. Fighting the Germans in Africa is cheaper than trying to open a whole in a Frotress Europe, that gets steadily stronger untill Japan is a real menace.
I will add that this strategy is by no means infexible, it allows for redeployment of US troops anywhere in Europe when and if an opportunity arrises.
