I love the really long twelve hour sessions that come with europe + pacific 1940 but it is really hard to enthuse new players with a game which is so good but will inevitably chew up a huge portion of their wekend. So I welcome a shorter game for training and showing the weaker players out there just how good A&A is. Also the new sculpts are exciting. All we need now is some pictures of them.

That's my logic. Sure I have a couple friends who are really into those long gaming sessions, but even then after 6 hours the attraction wanes. This game time sounds like it sits perfectly in with a lot of other really popular board games ou there, which means it allows us to play a version of axis and allies with a larger audience. I for one am excited to be able to finally get my roomates and my girlfriend to play the game with me.

I disagree. In order to drum up new players and interest in the game, you need the spectrum of game lengths. Each new edition makes the game last days if not weeks, which is great. There are a few versions that take roughly 3 hours. All of these are still trumped by any modern Euro/Strategy games, like Settlers of Catan, Carcassonne, and more. I actually think it is fantastic if A&A can bring in players from that world because the game play time is reasonable for an evening session.

Finally, not everybody has the free time required to play a 10-12 hour game of A&A. If you want to play A&A and introduce new friends (or young kids) to the game, this could be the perfect edition for that. I might even be able to convince my wife and friends, who all prefer the aforementioned strategy games, to play this version.

Actually, I really don't need a game that plays that quickly. Axis and Allies has always been something to be savored and played over a long, slow, rainy or snowy afternoon with a couple of good friends. Besides, when we're in the mood for something that's plays quickly, we just play either of original Europe or Pacific. They last us about three to four hours and that's plenty quick enough for us. Axis and Allies is not for tweakers.

That I don't know for certain. There are new units in 1942 2nd Edition and there are new sculpts in 1941 and 1942 but I don't know what the overlap is.

If I had to guess, there will be overlap in order to save on production costs.

We will be receiving a review copy in about 2-3 weeks.

The 1941 release is a brand new game. It will play in about 90-120 minutes. Though, I guessing we should tack on an extra 30-45 minutes to that number.

The 1942 2nd Edition release is a refresh to 1942 Edition, which is the "base edition" that has evolved since the original.
Classic Axis & Allies
Then came Axis & Allies Revised
Then came Axis & Allies (Spring) 1942
Then came Axis & Allies 1942 2nd Edition

Everything else is a "different" game.

What will the difference between the "41 & "42 re releases be? I'm talking board, plastic pieces, etc. Because they both talk about changes to the pieces, have the same updates been made to each or will they be different.

If you read the article, I have confirmation that it is not a joke. First of all the initial rumblings were several months ago. Second of all this announcement was released on March 29.

A typo made the statements a bit ambiguous. 160 of the pieces included will be new, never seen before sculpts.
