• I have been in a terrible dice funk lately…all the key little battles I lose, I don’t hit on defense for sh*t… if I end up winning my games in progress, they will be little miracles.

Any adivice for helping me break this hex… I’ll try anything at this point.

I suggest playing more conservatively, avoid your susceptibility to bad dice.

not possible (unless I don’t want to attack)

I am losing battle to 8% to 15% outcomes, consistently…

Hmm - in that case, I suggest attacking your own forces.

Seriously though, sometimes it’s better to not attack. Build your forces and move them into position for battles where you will have overwhelming advantage.

  • 2007 AAR League

I have a better suggestion - slip Frood a $20 and see if the dice gods at frood.net smile on you after that

  • 2007 AAR League

    Heh heh.

Not sure about that - Jenn has sent me two donations, and she’s always complaining about bad dice.

I’d have to know who was rolling though - because the same two email addy’s are entered for each battle - how would my dicey know when to give the good dice?

maybe I should build in a cheat code…

  • I have had bad luck with Dan;s dicey in critical battles as well…  And I too am a donor to his site…

Maybe you need to TAKE $20 from him, since giving money does not seem to create favor with the dice gods :-D

  • 2007 AAR League

You’re probably giving him those funny American $20s.  What good are those to him?

    Change your dicey.

I don’t care what these boys tell you, dicey’s have personalities and sometimes, you do something to piss off the dicey.

  • I ahve to agree.

Neither the in-site nor Frood like me.  DAAK though seems to sway my way about 70% of the time (heck last game I think I scored an average of 1 hit above average per battle over the course of the entire game)

I don’t care what these boys tell you, dicey’s have personalities and sometimes, you do something to piss off the dicey.

Well, I don’t know about others, but my dicey does NOT have a personality - For example:

    1 Inf v. 1 Inf, 10,000x - yields expected results - Defender hits 33%, Attacker hits 17%

Bomber v. AA gun, 10,000x - Bomber is shot down 17% of the time

1 Arm v. 1 Arm, 10,000x - both attacker and defender hit 50% of the time.

But, dice are random and there is quite a range of variability in individual results. Also, there are a lot of psychological mechanisms that cause one to see the dice as being skewed - eg., confirmation bias, etc. Or, people may see that it says 90% likely to survive, but that does not mean 90% likely to survive unscathed - that 90% includes some pretty bad results where only 1 of your tanks survives.

Your dicey does too have a personality.  It’s been flirting with me for months now, giving me slight advantages over my opponent. :P

DAAK, on the other hand, is averaging what SEEMS to be 90% kill rates against my fighters and bombers with AA Guns against me.

Well, believe what you will. If there’s one thing I’ve learned on this board, it’s that if someone wants to believe something, there is no force on earth that will move them to change that belief. Including me ;)

  • You are still paying for that J1 against me.

  • Hi.

The average 50 cent to 75 cents dice, if one inspects them closely, are sometimes not perfectly shaped.  For example, I got some white and red dice in my Revised set newly purchased this March.  Now, one of my white dice in the game-set is slightly trapezoidal shaped on three sides.  So some of the dice rolls might be slightly skewed.

I’m aware that some of my smaller six-sided dice consistently give more 4’s, 5’s, and 6’s than one’s, two’s, or three’s, so I’m pretty sure that one or more of these dice are also slightly denser on one side than the other.  One way to identify these dice is to roll one die multiple times and check the frequency for each number.

The larger, red casino dice are supposed to be more random than the inexpensive 50 cent dice available at most gamestores.

    –—

If one gets four sixes and two ones on the first roll,  then 2 sixes and 4 ones on the second roll, the problem might be with the technique used to roll the dice.  One of my fellow players tended to flip his dice results over like pancakes, because the dice weren’t really agitating well enough in his hands.  Some possible remedies: buying more new dice so the same dice don’t get rolled over and over, rolling smaller handfulls of dice, using a different surface for the dice to bounce on, or varying the method of rolling the dice.

Other options if the dice are skewed:  getting a little more of the units that hit with a three’s or four’s, and less units that hit on a one or a two.

Dunno if fighting three small battles is better than consolidating for one big battle, if the dice rolls are bad.

To break the hex, find a public place, and jump around naked shouting “Gods of dice, smile upon me!  Look with favor upon me!  Gaze upon me with delight!”

Then the men in the white suits will come and take you to the padded room, where there are no board games or dice, or other things of that nature.

Sometimes, you get the boys in blue.  The trick is convincing them that only the guys in white suits will do.

  • Generally anything thought to generate “good” karma is probably the way to go- help an old lady across the street, get the cat out of the tree, help out at the soup kitchen et al. Alternately just don’t do anything that generates “bad” karma- throw and old lady into the street, hang a cat from a tree, poison the soup in the kitchen et al.

  • NPB and Frimmel

    Thanks for the laughs!

I actually DID recieve a huge dice break (after a crappy one put me on the chopping block….)

I’ve had opponents go OH for 13 on bombing runs against me…
