These are fundamental questions, and I want to make sure I’m playing correctly.

    2 different scenarios:

    1)  Russia’s first move.

They attack West Russia with all their assets from Russia (and only Russia).  Then, after winning West Russia they “blitz” their tanks from Caucasus and Archangel through the newly acquired West Russia and attack Belorussia.

Is this allowable?  Also, if I win West Russia do I have to move all of my Russian forces into West Russia, or only those I select?

    2)  Sea Zone battles.  Let’s say I’m Germany on G1 and I want to destroy the UK transport next to Eastern Canada in SZ1.  Do I have to move the German sub from SZ8 into that zone to attack and then leave the sub in that zone if I win?  Is there anyway to attack SZ1 but not “take” it by destroying the TRN?

    Thanks for the clarification.

    1. No it’s not allowed because you have to claim all your combat moves at once so the tanks can’t go through West Russia just assuming you will have it.
    2. No if you’re attacking the sub it has to stay there because it has moved and conducted combat so no noncombat move.

On Russia 1:  If you take West Russia, you may move your tanks two spaces through West Russia to Archangelsk or Karelia if you want too, from Caucasus.  Of course, you could also just move your tanks from Caucasus to Archangelsk through Russia too.

On Germany 1:  If you sink all enemy combatants in the zone you are in, you may not retreat out of it afterwards.  You are stuck there.

    Jen-

On the sub issue, here’s the bigger question.  Do I have to move that sub into the zone where the TRN resides in order to attack it?  The reason I’ve got it stuck in my head that I don’t have to move the sub into that zone is because in land combats (I think) you attack an adjacent space but don’t have to “take” it.  Am I thinking correctly here?

You do have to move the sub into the Sea Zone to attack the Trn but if you kill the Trn then you can’t leave the Sea Zone after that.

No, even in land combat you physically invade that location.  However, as in naval combat, as long as an enemy survives you can retreat.

Wait a minute, cuz that’s a big change for how I’ve been playing.

In my first scenario, if I take West Russia and I used all of my Russian assets to do it, do I then have to move all of my surviving units from Russia into the newly captures West Russia??

    All but the fighter

  • Yes all the victorious survivors must go to West Russia.  That is why you declare which forces are going to be used to attack.  I know I have been guilty of sending way to many forces to attack a weakly defended territory only to wish I hadn’t sent so many.

Your confusion may stem from how you are performing movement.

You don;t move those forces into West Russia AFTER you win.

You move them into West Russia before you roll a single die.  Your invading forces share West Russia with the German forces, and you fight it out.
If you win, your forces STAY there (you can’t non-combat move land units that were used in combat)
If you are destroyed, you ahve no forces left… they all dies IN West Russia.
If you retreat, they pull OUT of West Russia and go BACK to one territory that your units started from.

If you want drive-by attacks, play Grand Theft auto  :-P

Thanks for pointing that out.  Conceptually that helps me understand how the game really works.  But it certainly changes how I’ve been playing the game (for the better!).

Actually, if you want drive by, don’t kill all the enemies in that territory.  It’s called “Strafing.”  Great for dwindling German/Russian/Japanese infantry stacks if you can afford it.
