• So I was playing Europe 1940 with my brother over the past few days, and it went rather eventfully. We’re just playing with the rules out of the box, so after some horrendously-timed bad luck Germany(me!) managed to take England T3 and then turn to try to deal with Russia. It was a bit of a cold war with Russia as both sides took and re-took Slovakia, Poland, Finland, and Romania with as few units as possible, to get their National Objectives while still building up huge forces.

Meanwhile, Italy was becoming the only force in the Mediterranean, meeting all 3 of its objectives by T4. At that point, Italy began building up a fleet, all the while sending tanks to invade Caucausus through the minor IC Britain had thoughtfully placed in Egypt. The USA has been continually sending over groups of transports with a few escorts, only for them to be sunk before they can reach England.

Finally, Italy moved out, and successfully landed 8 infantry, 3 RTL, and 5 tanks in Quebec(to get around the American destroyers blocking direct conquest) after two turns at sea. A large group of German transports containing 10 infantry and 4 tanks also moved next to Gibraltar, ostensibly to avoid destruction by a British fighter(USA finally had taken England, and I decided it wasn’t worth it, since UK had literally 12 IPCs at that point).

The United States had almost no defensive units, and could only place 10 infantry in Eastern to go with 2 fighters. The Italians destroyed them, took their 66 IPC bonus(saved 1), and chuckled. Then, on the very next turn, the US took back their country with the rest of its infantry and a pair of bombers. Sadly, all their ships had been destroyed by Italian planes and subs and so, they were unable to stop the German transports from sailing in merrily, destroying the opposition easily, and taking 65 IPCs for themselves.

And that’s how I earned a total of 265 IPCs with two powers in one round of play. (137 Germany, 128 Italy)

  • …your parents must be proud of you

  • Absolutely horrendous play by the Allies. I would understand if the game had a ‘fog of war’ mechanism, but there’s no excuse for the USA to ever lose their capital before the end of the game. There’s simply no way to land an ambush invasion fleet in Washington. Horrendous play. Funny story tho.

  • Wow! Thanks for sharing phattemer. While Moltke is right, you can only play what is on the board and clearly took your chances. :-)

A warm welcome to the forum.

    Cheers
