Our gaming group has recently started playing AA50 again after playing a lot of Global 1940. With lots of gaming experience available now I was curious as to what people think is a fair bid for both the 1941 version and 1942 version. Please assume a dice game with people of equal skill level as we already add a handicap bid against the more experienced players to make it fun and a challenge for everyone.

We play with National Objectives. We play with the Dardanelles closed and Escorts/Interceptors.  Tech is allowed but rarely used. Bids are placed on the board (or money in the bank) as follows:
- Maximum one unit per territory
- Must be a unit already in territory of same Power

My impression is that the Allies need a bid of $9 in both versions to be balanced.

What do you all think?

1941?
1942?

Here is our current bid(s) under the Chicago Rules (house rules) for 1941:

Bids under Chicago Rules

Add units before game play begins.  Only one additional unit per territory/sea zone.  The territory/sea zone must already contain at least one unit to permit a bid unit to be added.  No Bombers, Battleships, or Aircraft Carriers can be placed as part of any bid.

Russia may not place more than $10 worth of units in the following combination of territories:
Karelia, Baltic States, Eastern Poland, Ukraine, Eastern Ukraine, Belorussia, Archangelsk, Urals, Russia, Caucasus, Kazakh, Novosibirsk or Evenki National Okrug.

Chinese inf may be also be bid units, at a cost of $2.  Other Chinese bid units are regular cost.

Bidding Rules:
1.   Allies may bid $28, with a maximum of $25 being placed as instant units, remaining $3 can be split amongst the allies, being added to their first round IPC bank.  Darndelles straight is closed.
2.   The allies can bid to Open the Dardenlles straight, with the resulting bid increasing to $30.
3.   If the allies have not opened the Dardenlles straight, the axis can ‘force open’ the Dardenelles Straight, but the bid level is now $34 (as a penalty for forcing open the canal).  $4 of that bid must be an artillery for Russia in the Caucasus.  The Caucasus art must be included in the $10 limit of Russian bid units.

I can send you our rules if your are interested.  We've found the 1941 game to be pretty balanced under the Chicago Rules.

Wow!  A bid of 28!!!  That is amazing.  You say the Allies "may" bid to 28.  Does that mean that lower bids are accepted and the lowest bid is the Allies?  I have sent you a private message - please do send me the Chicago rules.

We HATE dice, so some of the 'imbalance' is because we play Low Luck dice.  This helps the axis in the first round, so the bid needs to be increased.  A bid this high also enables the Japanese monster to be slowed.  In fact, the Pacific is a very active theatre in our games.

Your answer may be here Jonathanmeyer, or axis roll will chime in and give you something with no low luck bids.
