  • I have played A&A 4 or 5 times with my sister in law’s ex and he loves the games. He has told his flat mates and they are keen to play, so I have sold(at cost) my 2nd copy for him to take back to university.
He knows I want to hear how things go. I told him, as there are 4 of them, they could all chip in and buy another game if it proves a success.

I played one game with my kid and went pretty easy on him, he liked it but as it is summer and I work in the tourism industry, we have little time together. I suspect we’ll play more once school starts.

  • I showed my wife how to play using this game.

    Success story?

Despite advice on the importance of capitals, she went in light on West Russia, and lost the attack. So I took Moscow on my G1 counterattack. Success!

    (crickets chirping)

  • You should have let her play the Axis. That way things are balanced and more fun for her.
    You meanie!

  • Customizer

Yeah, geeze! When you play rochambeau against her do you always go first?

  • '10

Haven’t played with any kids yet, but I’ve had some success introducing (or re-introducing) new players with it.  The coolest thing for me is being able to play a game on a weeknight, in one of our normal fourish-hour slots.

  • I got my brother who hadn’t played A&A in years to play, and I got my 10 year old nephew to play for the first time ever since 1941 came out. Neither of them would have been interested in 1942 2ed. straight out of the gate. My brother actually did play 42 2ed. after a few games of 1941.

  • I got a guy from work to play tonight. He was the Axis and I won. He had fun or seemed to and says he’s interested in playing again, and was talking about so he could see how he made a few mistakes. I played with the kids gloves on and made a few mistakes kind of on purpose just so it didn’t seem so one sided. Playing A&A purchases are so very important and this game more so than most. it seemed to take 2 or 3 rounds before he started really figuring out how to purchase and by then the game was basically lost for him. The biggest thing seems to be new players figuring out the odds of them winning there combats and how much firepower they need to win. But that takes time and experience.

  • New to the game and the forums. I decided to buy the 1941 edition because it was reasonably priced (around 25 euros) and I thought it would be the best version to introduce to my friends who have also never played the game (we mostly play RISK Napoleon and Diplomacy) .
After two sessions everyone seems really enthusiastic and wants to play more. I feel I’ve got the rules and most of the gameplay down and I’m already looking for the next, more complicated version to buy.
I think this is a great game for introducing new players to Axis & Allies, but I can’t see me or my friends playing this version for more than a few more games before we want to play the good stuff.

A couple more things: Russia seems like an impossible nation to play and it really annoyed me that there are too few markers and units.
Is it just me or doesn’t the US industrial score add up properly ? (set-up says 15, adding up the territories gives 17 IC)

  • Is an  error. Is 17 for US.

  • @Most:

Yeah, geeze! When you play rochambeau against her do you always go first?

    Of course not!

    I make her go first…

On a serious note, I also played this version with a friend of mine (A&A virgin) who quickly moved up to 1942 2nd edition after our first game, and has been obsessed with playing that game ever since.

So yeah, I guess that '41 is serviceable as a ‘gateway game’ for the series.

    Mickey: “You’re a bum, Rock. You’re a bum.”
Rocky: “I ain’t no bum, Mick. I ain’t no bum.”

  • played my first game today, I was Allies and lost but not sure if it was because the game is supposedly Axis Biased or because I had some pretty Cruddy roles of the die.

  • Customizer

On a side note. My 10y old, halfway through the game was unimpressed with moving all his units to the battle board and said “can’t we just figure out our rolls while the units stay in the territories?”

    Hell yeah.

  • Allies aren’t designed to win, but I think I would try this for your Allies (let me know how it works out because haven’t set anything in motion). (this may only work if Japan gives PH a wide berth after sacking your BB on J1) (at anytime if you feel India is going to be lost get your FTR to either Moscow but I would prefer if you get it to the UK territory on the southern west part of Sahara to land on UK CV…if you still have Gib FTR, you have options, but the key here is to erradicate Germany, so get it to the Sahara)
    Russia turtles. (hit and runs)
UK1: 3inf (2inf UK, 1 India).  Use the surviving DD and UK FTR to ensure sub off EUS destroyed. Hit German Transport w/ Bomber.  If Germany spared your Gibraltar FTR (as in, only hit the CV with SS but didn’t take Gibraltar to neutralize your plane instantly), use this to help elimante the DD/Trans w/the bomber. If your Egypt troops survived, get them to Moscow ASAP. Use Aus transport to reinforce India.  Hit the SS/DD for Japan with your DD/FTR/SS (you can save the SS, but you risk the FTR, but you can move the SS to EI or Red Sea for NCM to either move it into the Med or give India one last prayer or hit unescorted trans if Japan goes Island hopping)
US1: Drop two DD in EUS. Move all units to EUS (this includes Pac Fleet)
UK2: 1inf India, save the rest. Get your FTR back to UK.
US2: You’ll have saved 1, but may be down 2 (from China and Phillipines).  Buy 1 DD/1Trans.  Move all Pac Fleet to EUS coast now.

UK3: Place CV in SZ9.   If you still haven’t moved the Indian FTR (if Gib FTR was lost), now is the time to move it to the Saharan UK territory on West end.  Japan may be coming for you…if that’s the case, abandon all inf in India and pack up for Moscow.  The one inf you bought in India should be your blocker. Hopefully Caucus can hold past G4. If it can’t, you may need to start filtering those inf 1 at a time starting on UK1 to Caucus.
US3: Keep an eye out for Japan hitting SF.  Buy one trans, and either a DD or units (you should have the Atlantic by now, so I’d go 2inf).  Move US (CV/2FTR/DDs/2Trans,2inf/2tanks to SZ9 to back up carrier. Move US Bomber to UK as well. (let the shuck begin!)

I think you can take the rest from here, but this should be a good base to see if KGF will succeed.  Let me know if you use this and how it turns out…the Allies need a much needed win. Don’t get backdoored by the Japanese in Russia or US (easy to say  :-( )

  • Well both of us were playing this game for the first time, I let him pick the forces he wanted since I was aware of the axis bias, as it goes he made some mistakes to the point GB took southern Europe on its first turn with troops from India ?(thats a first for me) and as Russia I had them take Western Russia on the first turn.

Also the part where I got confused was how a countries own Factories could only produce the amount of troops that territories IPC’s says. (wanted to flood India with troops to help Russia out, but could only put one per turn)
