Man,I hate Ukr
I have tried West Russia/Ukraine opener twice in last month: once with Malachi and a few days ago with Alsch91. Both times I got diced. The first time I continued I lost virtually everything. The second time I retreated after the first round to save my tanks from counterattack the following round. That (retreating after the first round) worked better because I just lost the Infantry and Artillery.
I don’t know if Ukraine is worth it. Maybe put everything into West Russia instead? I saw an argument between Bunnies and Darth Maximus in the Submit Articles section about it (though it was really about Revised not Spring 1942):

Tho I hate the Ukraine battle I do think it’s a must battle for the Russians.
Sometimes it’s a very stiff price to pay,but in my opinion a must(gotta kill that Ger ftr)
Just my opinion tho.The Russians will get drunk tonight & brace themselves for the onslaught.
