Strategy for AAM Naval help


  • Ok im about to play naval minis and need some help.

    Im the allies
    Ships:

    Allies:
    2 Battleships
    1 carrier
    1 auxiliary
    2 subs
    5 cruisers
    5 destroyers
    4 aircraft

    Axis:
    3 Battleships (1 normal, 1 super, 1 Italian pre war ship)
    2 subs
    2 cruisers
    5 Destroyers
    6 Aircraft

    I know I have more, but its that dumb old super battleship I cant sink. :x

    What do I do? :?

    I was using my subs and torpedoe planes for BB and Cruisers, but at the end I lost everything and he had 1 Badly damaged BB (1 more hull point!) and 1 pre war BB

    Second this. Less destroyers/cruisers and more aircraft and carriers in your fleet build. I haven’t played any of the newer sets to offer specific piece recommendations though.

    Exactly. The Secondarys on your BB’s can take care of Crusiers and Destroyers. Sub swarms can also be useful. If anything if they are getting close to his capitol ships they will distract his planes from you ships for a few turns.

    well without knowing what exact units u are using, i would drop 3-4 of your cruisers, use points for more subs and fighters.

    Don’t use the Auxilaries unless in a convoy scenario, they are mostly worthless for naval combat. exception to this rule is the Nordmark, actually a very useful Aux. (set 1)

    Also knowing that he doesn’t have a carrier ahead of time is a huge advantage if exploited correctly.

    Other then other and better BB’s, the best method against BB’s is torpedoes whether from subs or planes or DD’s or if your the IJN the LL’s  cut through BB’s like a knife through butter.

    Don’t put too much faith in Long Lance torpedos. Sure when they hit its great but if you don’t get 6’s they are pretty crappy and you will regret building an entire navy based on a 1 in 6 chance of hitting with torps. You can trust me on that one, ive been there many times and don’t build exclusive LL navys anymore. Go with a good mix of Japanese gunnery from the heavy cruisers and back it up with LL’s from the light cruisers and destroyers. But  bear in mind destroyers rarely make it past turn 3 also.

    The key is to fire soo many torpedoes that a 1/6 odds is all you need, i won a 8player OOB tournament as Japan (im ranked #1 outside the USA on the forum mini) with
    Musashi
    Soryu
    Elite zero x 3
    Zero x1
    Haguro
    Chikuma
    Murasame
    Shigure
    Hatsukaze
    Isokaze

    I was sinking 6 hull BB’s in one turn with Just LL torpedo’s and the other Japan squads I was going up against though I won I lost my musashi the exact same way to them in one turn as well on 2 occasions.  With range 3 torps and LL the IJN DD’s and cruisers are more then worth their weight.

    Why?

    I guess Anti-Sub might keep them around, but otherwise…

    DD’s are the true troopers in ur navy, and should be protected as best as u can.
    1. they are the best ASW unit available
    2. A DD swarm is straight up nasty
    3. DD’s shoot torps and alot of them when attacking in groups
    4. Most players only go after the dd’s if they absolutly have too or have nothing else to do
    5. BB’s main Batteries can’t hit them except on 6’s
    6. extended range is useless on them
    7. give em a decent escort and they do have some good survivablity
    8. DD’s have some great abilities- Smoke screen, chase the salvos and Sub Hunter to name just a few

    I played in a tournament- non historical using a Italian DD Swarm with one Gorizia  cruiser and no air at all. I fought 4 Musashi’s and 4 Zero’s and won easily


  • I guess that could work but you’d need a lot of DD’s…

    And I’d target them (not as the first target, but still) for the reasons you say they’re good.

    Auxiliaries can be good anti-Heavy Shore Batteries. Considering I have a Shore Battery and no auxiliaries, though…


  • Aren’t cruisers really good vs destroyers? I’d just play 4 cruisers and kill everyone of your destroyers…

    they could be, but most cruiser do not have torp defense, so they only need to be hit 1 time with a torp and a DD’s gunnery can cause the other wound, a true dd swarm would probably crush a handful of cruisers
