unsolvable. ready to destroy. need help.

Yes i'm having the familiar directplay error problem but PLEASE bear with me!

Here's the deal:  I've patched.  I've tackled the dplayx.dll problem in more ways than one (delete and overwrite).  I've checked that i have directx9 and updated it.  i've updated windows 98.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled many times.  I've even bought another game.  I've opened all my firewall ports.  ALL TO NO AVAIL.  i cannot play on the zone or thru a ip game with a friend.  I STILL GET THE DIRECTPLAY ERROR!

This has become my white whale and an obsession.  If anyone helps I will send them gifts.

God help me.
