• Again, I know that must have been asked many times, but I really can’t seem to find an asnwer.

In OOB, can planes scramble in sea zones 109 and 110, if they are posted in London?

    What about in alpha+2?

    Many thanks.

  • Official Q&A

    OOB, no.  Alpha, yes.

  • i know in the original rules that it says that on islands may scramble to the surrounding sea ZONE. for the first few games me and my group said you could scramble within the airplanes range. not sure about the alpha two rules though

  • Official Q&A

They may only scramble into a sea zone that’s adjacent to the territory containing them and the airbase.

  • If I understand well, in Alpha +2, planes can scramble from anywhere, even if the territory isn’t an island.

For example, italians might want to scarmble their planes in Southern Italy, to defend their ships?

  • Official Q&A

Yes.  In Alpha+.2, planes may scramble from any coastal territory that contains an airbase.

  • OK, thanks Krieghund.

One last question about this: can planes from allied powers stationed on a territory also scramble (to a maximum of 3 planes I take it).

For example: can the French plane in London scramble, or can it only fight if the UK is invaded.

Cheers and many thanks for the clarification.

  • Official Q&A

Yes, they may scramble (assuming the controlling player wishes them to), but they are still subject to the three unit limit.  For example, if the French fighter in United Kingdom scrambles, only up to two UK planes may also scramble.

  • I will admit something: I apparently do not understand anything about the scrambling rules….

    A couple more questions:
-Can planes scramble if there only are barge coming to unload? (I think not)
-In the case of an amphibious assault, when does the attacking player decide which planes/boats participate in the sea battle and which participate in the ground battle? Basically, does the defending player announce his intention to scramble first, or does the attacking player split his units first. My point is that, if the attacking player needs to go first, the defending player won’t scramble anything, knowing the sea battle lost, therefore forcing that attacker to not use considerably more planes then necessary in the sea battle.

Yes, if it’s an amphibious assault.  The planes will fire once before the transports retreat.  Doing an unescorted amphibious assault where planes may scramble cannot succeed.

The attacker assigns his/her units before the defender decides whether or not to scramble.

  • I also have two questions about scrambling. Q1: Can 3 planes scramble into any battle that is taking place in an adjacent SZ? Using U.K. as an example can three UK fighters scramble if i attack the tranny/destroyer in SZ 109 opening round? Q2: If i am attacking both SZ 109 and SZ 110, can UK choose which battle they scrable their fighters too?

  • Official Q&A

Q1:  In Alpha+.2, they may scramble into any adjacent sea zone(s) from a territory with an operative air base.  In OOB, they may only scramble into the surrounding sea zone from islands (territories completely surrounded by one sea zone) with operative air bases.

Q2:  Yes, in Alpha+.2.  UK may scramble a total of 3 fighters, splitting them between the two sea zones in any way the UK player likes.  In OOB, the fighters may not be scrambled at all, since United Kingdom is not an island.

  • @Krieghund:

since United Kingdom is not an island.

The UK is not an island?  Interesting, considering that it is smaller than a lot of US states and totally surrounded by water.  Hard to find a spot in the UK more than 100 miles from the coast.

And why the limit on the number of planes scrambled?

The A&A definition of an island is a territory completely surrounded by a single sea zone.  Since the UK has multiple sea zones around it, it isn’t an island in A&A.

The limit is probably to make it harder for nations with a lot of planes (e.g. Japan) to scramble a huge force to defeat attacking fleets.
