yes - the sub cannot fire back.  however, if it survives the first round of battle, it can retreat to another sea zone (if a friendly one exists).

Yes, that is correct --  the sub cannot fire back and if it survives the first round of battle, it can retreat to another sea zone (if a friendly one exists).

Or, if you play the SS (submerging sub) House Rule, subs can submerge (turn on side to show submerged) after any round of attack.  They surface (turn upright) after the attack is over.
