The cave according to Gatto is the way classes are educated and how they are the same in every subject and do not allow for free thought of ideas and creativity. The people inside the cave are the students and teachers who have been subjected to the control of the six lessons and are not being allowed to learn anything that will help them truly improve there lives. The puppet masters according to Gatto are the people who pay the teachers, which are the state officials who determine the curriculum of the classes. They control everything because the rules they lay down show Gatto who the “bad” and “good” kids are determined by whether they follow the guidelines specifically or not.

Out side the cave for Gatto is a school system that is dramatically different form the present one that is in place today. Gatto’s idea of what the education system should become is “for most families is to teach their own children at home or small, de- institutionalized schools are another.” His ideas would allow children to learn in an environment where they can research topics that interest them and have real life applications so that when they are done with school they can be productive workers who do not rely on a system of tones to tell them when to stop an activity and move on to another.
