• First post all!

Alrighty then, I’ve played 3 games of this so far and lost all three times.  the first two times as Japan and the latest as US.

That being said it’s still a fun game, even if I’ve still never played it with the correct rules.
So let me get this straight as an arrow here:

The first game we played was at a convention and the judge thought that the “China does not surrender it’s IPCs to Japan” meant that China never loses IPCs at all and get 12 a turn even if taken over totally.  Therefore after I captured India the ANZAC player moved a transport up to Shang-hai and China threw down 22 infantry the next turn.
Also, it was unclear when powers could declare war and therefore the US player just said “i’m at war now” and started collecting the 40 ipc bonus.
We also didn’t notice that air bases had to be on island zones in order to sortie, so he flew 4 fighters out of india to kill my fleet as I tried to invade India.
But that’s okay because we also didn’t know that UK could non-combat troops to the Dutch territories and take them over, or the National Objectives rules.

The second game I was still Japan and lost because I tried to ignore China and focus on getting all the IPCs that I could from India while bombing them and invading.  Only problem was the guy who was playing India (like China in the first game) thought that he never lost IPCs so India had WAY more troops that should be and sorties the fighters out again killing my landing force.

The third game I was USA but we didn’t know about to UK non-combat take over of the Dutch islands and lost because Japan was getting about 72 IPCs every turn while we were struggling.  Also india and china didn’t attack at all they just sat there and built infantry.

The other rule i didn’t see before was the US declares war on it’s Collect Income phase of it’s third turn if it hasn’t been attacked by then.

    OOPS! lol

  • Also had a guy give up on the game because there aren’t fighter escort rules during strategic bombing raids like in the original A&A Europe, so I guess I’ve played 4 times.

Well… at least you’re still enjoying the game  :-D

Oh - and welcome to the site!

  • 1.) China doesn’t surrender its IPCs if it is taken over by Japan, nor will it collect more income once its territory is completely taken over.  You don’t get more cash just sitting around doing nothing while occupied.

2.) Scramble only works on islands, exceptions being Japan and England in the Europe board.

3.) There are fighter escorts in this game for the strategic bombing and there are also fighter defenders, the defenders can only come from the territory being strategic bombed.  Fighters attack at 1 and defend at 2 for one round of combat.

4.) Each side can take the DEI for more income while the UK and ANZAC can noncombat move planes to these islands without recieving their bonus if they haven’t taken them with ground troops.

5.) The US enters war at end of 3rd turn or if Japan declares war on UK and ANZAC before the 3rd turn then the US is at war with Japan on their turn of the round.

  • As far as I’ve heard nothing has been said about England in Euro40. In fact from what I’ve heard England will be two territories, so it will not fit the game definition of an island.

  • @Gharen:

Japan is no exception when it comes to scrambling.  It is an island and, like all islands, can scramble.  One special exception with Japan is that it is the only island which can have an industrial complex.  I know of no exceptions for England.

  • Thank you for catching my mistake, I had myself mixed up there.  Yeah it was the factory on island rule that I was thinking about.  If UK is split in half then it wouldn’t have the scramble ability.

  • New Guinea is an island and it’s split in two.

  • @robbie358:

New Guinea is an island and it’s split in two.

In the real world it’s an island. It is not an island in this game - No scramble allowed

To add to this, the game defines an island as 1 territory surrounded by 1 seazone. The only two oddballs are new zealand whicj the bottom of the board chops ogf, and Japan which can build ICs.

New zealand is an island in AAP40.  Planes can scramble and such.

  • Did we decide if New Guinea is an island in the real world or not?

You’re right - 1) attacking and defending fighters fire  2) casualties are selected  3) antiaircraft fires  4) casualties are selected  5) strategic bombing occurs

This is the first A&A game since Europe to use those rules, I believe.

  • Of course the rules are confusing, they were written by a bunch of chimps.

1942 had optional rules for fighter escort.

  • @Yoper:

If you want to call Larry and Krieghund a bunch of chimps, go right ahead.

The rules are their baby.  All the other mistakes are by the muttonheads at WotC.

Yes, I guess your buddies Mike and John dont make this kind of mistakes.

Well the rulebook I got leaves a lot to be desired and somebody has to be held accountable.

  • Yes, I agree. If writing rules and double checking isn’t your specialty, you shouldn’t be writing them. Helping yes. Directing yes. Final say yes. But not writing. Game creators create games. Writers and perfectionists write rulebooks.

  • I don’t agree, that’s why there are editors. They should have caught the typos or asked for clarifacation if the rules seemed ambiguous. If people blame Krieg or Larry, I suspect it’s simply because they are the most accessable.

Editted for spelling (I blame Krieg)

    Yoper:

“But spelling mistakes are different from people actually having troubles understanding certain ideas or concepts in the rules.”

Yes, they are different, but both fall under the jurisdiction of the editor(s).  That being said, I agree that “Trying to put forth a rule (like the political rules in AAP 40) in a way that is clear to all is a tough task.”

From what I’ve read, it seems that people should also apply some common sense - especially those who’ve been playing A&A games for many years.  I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve read of someone wanting a clarification - only to wonder why it needed to be clarified in the first place.

As to the spelling mistakes… well that’s just plain shoddy workmanship.  No, it doesn’t effect gameplay, and I’m still going to have fun playing the game. But if people are shelling out a fair amount of money for a game - they expect a higher quality product, one that doesn’t have spelling errors (which is something that might be expected from a garage based game publisher - not a major manufacturer).  And there is the element of presentation as well, in this kind of medium, it’s important.  And c’mon, consider the demographic of your buyers… we’re talking about guys (mainly) that go through great lengths such as painting the pieces, inventing pages of optional rules, making new maps etc.  Of course spelling mistakes are going to leap out at the average A&A enthusiast!

You stated, “I would like you (or anyone else) to give me a list of all the spelling mistakes in the rulebook.”  I’m not about to be an unpaid editor/proofer, but the point is that if there is one… that’s one too many.  It’s not that difficult to publish something without spelling mistakes - its done everyday.  And a lot of these publications don’t even have the benefit of more than one editor. Perhaps I’m a bit retentive in regard to the spelling issue, but I am obviously not alone in this stance.

BTW - I too don’t think anyone should be pointing fingers at the wardog or Larry Harris, it’s not like they design and produce the whole game themselves…
