Hi guys. New to A&A and have started playing the Spring 1942 edition. I just need some clarification on the use of subs.
Can a sub attack an unescorted battleship or cruiser in the combat turn? If so, how does the warship defend? Can I keep rolling for the sub until the ship is sunk?
I love the A&A concept but find the rule book a bit unclear in places so I may be asking for more advice.

yes, a sub can attack any naval unit.  the submarine fires, and unless a destroyer is present, if it hits, the naval unit is removed and does not get to return fire (unless its a battleship, then it takes two hits to sink).  if a destroyer is present, the submarine has no special ability and attacks like any other naval unit.
Krieghund has final say on all rule clarification though.  you might want to post this in Axis & Allies: Spring 1942 section for more advice

A sub can hit any naval unit, including other subs. This means an un-escorted transport will be automatically killed by a sub. Planes essentially cannot hit subs, unless they attack with a destroyer. In this case, roll attack for planes and destroyer, then roll defense for the subs. The subs defense has to be take on the destroyer, not the planes.

Hello,

I quote this sentence and i am very surprised. A sub can perform an attack against an ennemy sub ? It's confirmed ?

If yes, make clear please if a sub can perform a sneak attack against an ennemy sub ? Possible or not ? But a sneack attack is possible in defense too, right or wrong ? So it's seems impossible to manage a sneak attack beetween two ennemies subs ?? Please help.  huh

Thank-you very much, and sorry for my bad english.

A sub can choose to attack an enemy sub yes, but.....

The enemy sub can choose to:

1) Submerge thus ending the combat and living to fight another day or....
2) Fight, both subs get a first shot I believe and could destroy each other.  Perhaps the sub is performing convoy escort duty for transports and decided to fight to protect the transports.

Of course the presence of destroyers on either side will modify this sequence.
