Question about order of Combat

Love Battle of the Bulge it was my first induction into axis and allies, moving into 1942 and 1940 - Shame it gets such a slating.

I love this game. I think the reasons for the slating are two fold.

It is radically different than the other A&A games, so if you’ve been playing them for awhile, it takes a LOT of time to “unlearn” how pieces move and act from all the prior games. Even strategic tendencies as the Allies have to be unlearned.

The rules were difficult to comprehend. Perhaps it was this way for me back when I first learned A&A 30+ years ago, but each variation of A&A since is only the addition of a couple of new pieces and a few new rules, so they were easier to unbox and play. That and some of the critical rules aren’t repeated where I feel they should be, such as the movement rule I had to discover about towns…it wasn’t mentioned again under the movement section where you think it should be.

I think those two combined have led to me playing the game incorrectly at least 5 times. I’ve only played it once where I think I played it correctly.

i still love to play it, I just hope I’ll reach a point where I remember all the rules. It certainly sucks to spend several hours setting up and playing the game only to find you’ve been doing it all wrong about truck movements, zone of control, blitzing, or movement stopping incorrectly, to name several of the “Oh, @#$%! We’ve been doing it wrong the whole game!”

German units from Hex A and Hex B are attacking Allied units in Hex C. Does only 1 supply need to be paid because there is only one target hex, or does there need to be one supply paid for each hex that is targeting it?

One Supply must be paid for each hex that is activated to attack.  Note that the attacks from the two hexes are carried out separately.

One Supply is paid to activate the hex for movement, and a second is paid to allow blitzing, for a total of two.

I was just reviewing the rules on the attack phase and it states that “You may choose to roll less than the alloted dice if you wish by holding back certain units in the attack. Any units you hold back may not attack this turn.”

Question: When attacking, is there any tactical reason to roll less dice than the alloted amount? Since there is no counter attack, keeping units from attacking doesn’t seem to serve any useful purpose. Am I missing something?

The main reason for this would probably be to keep from destroying the supplies on the hex tile.

After a truck stops in an enemy ZOC, how and when can it be released for further movement?

If the enemy units are pushed back or eliminated so that the Truck is no longer in the ZoC, the Truck can move.  Also, the Truck can move one hex out of the ZoC in the Movement part of the Movement & Reinforcement phase, then move off the board in the next turn, assuming it is still out of the ZoC at that time.

Units, including Tanks, may only move in the Movement & Reinforcement phase (other than retreating, of course), so if a unit is retreated it may not attack in the same turn.

The only thing that I know of that you can do is edit the original post and change the Message Icon that appears next to the thread, but I don’t know how much success you’d have trying to get people to do it consistently.

I would just add as to the supply tokens that these don’t have to be moved onto the board as they are added per turn.  for example, as the Axis, you get 9 I believe, and if you only wanted to move 6 of them onboard with trucks, the others would be left off board and could be moved on during your next turn, much the same way that not all of your reinforcements have to move on-board, but could be left off-board.  they still would move on in the order from the chart though.

East (right) of Houffalize is a German force :evil: attacking the Americans in Houffalize. The Half-track represents Armored Infantry. The Tiger tank is SS Panzer. The Panzer IV is ordinary armor. This is turn 3. In the BOB, this would add up to 12 (4 Tanks X 2 = 8; 1 Infantry = 1; 1 Arty = 3).

Is this still the case in your House Rules or does this force add up to 17 (2 Tanks = 6; 2 SS Panzer = 6; 1 Armored Infantry = 2; 1 Arty = 3  8-) and clearly overstacked (after turn 1)?

I know there’s a bonus die roll but that shouldn’t count against stacking. Right?  :-P

they did, only the tank in the south even survived, –in the north, a couple infantry, an ART and the tank.  Allies should have dumped more into Bastogne and surrounding area i guess. 
  And since nothing else survived, the tank was cut off from supplies and allies didn’t bring any more up to allow it to even move.
