General / Axis & Allies News / Axis & Allies on the Great Lakes
|
on: January 04, 2013, 01:18:18 pm

So this last summer we're on vacation and one day we're touring a museum ship. The United States Coast Guard ICEBREAKER MACKINAW WAGB-83 also known as the “Queen of the Great Lakes”. She was built as part of the war effort during World War II to meet the heavy demands of war materials and transportation during the winter months. Decommissioned in 2006, she now resides at her namesake home of Mackinaw City, Michigan, and is open for public tours and group events. We visit the Mess Deck, Captains Quarters, Bridge, Engine Room and when we look into the Ward Room, you'll never guess what they had on display. Apparently, the favortie pastime for the crew was playing a game. AXIS & ALLIES! My son and I started laughing and pointing for my wife to look. She smiled a silly grin and said something aong the line of "Oh Gawd -that game has infected our servicemen too?" Anyway, I finally was going through the pictures we took and thought I'd share these w/ all you A&A nuts. Warm regards, Mad Dog http://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/n534/maddog771/012_zps46c6745c.jpghttp://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/n534/maddog771/013_zps3ebf6603.jpghttp://i1138.photobucket.com/albums/n534/maddog771/014_zpsffbfaa3a.jpg

Axis & Allies / Axis & Allies Global 1940 / Re: What do you use to count losses from combat?

Too much work. Remove casualties after each throw of the dice but allow the defender to "trade" a hit on one unit for another unit. Isn't what most folks do? I've always just removed the causulties after each throw. Both attacking and defending. On very rare occasions, when there's like 20-30 units attacking & defending, we'll use tally marks on the dry-eraser board.

Axis & Allies / Axis & Allies Global 1940 / Re: Length of Average Game

It's been about 1 year since I played, but 1 hour a round is about what I averaged. 12 hour game at a minimum. Regarding any electronic game battle & odds simulator -anybody shows up at my game w/ one they don't play or leave it in your car. I think that's just taking it too far. It's a board game for pete's sake. It requires HUMAN skill and intellegence. Not electronic gadgets. JMHO.

Axis & Allies / Axis & Allies Europe 1940 / Re: Political Implications of Sea Lion
|
on: March 08, 2012, 07:17:40 pm

I'm unclear whether a successful Sea Lion (G1-G3) changes the political situation.
Does the fall of London bring USA and/or USSR into the war or do they still have to wait till USA3/R4?
pretty sure OOB rules are No, they wait like normal in the instance of an attack. But Alpha 3 states this: "If the United States has war declared on it by an Axis power, an Axis power captures London or any territory in North America, or Japan makes an unprovoked declaration of war on the UK or ANZAC, the United States may declare war on any or all Axis powers." Um....you're quoting Global rules. (1st hint tipping you off should have been the mention of Japan & ANZAC....no Japan or ANZAC in Europe 1940) So to answer the OP question. No, it does not bring USA into the war when London falls. OOB rules are pretty clear on that one (See page 19 -21)

I don't want to come off as mean, but splitting USA into west/east is the most retarded idea ever. Not only does it remove the strategic flexibility of the USA to commit most of its materials to one board or the another, it goes completely against game balance and game design. Something tells me your group didn't think long and hard about the ramifications of such a decision.
This is a pretty arrogant post. Let people play their own games. It's all in the name of fun. Something tells me you're one of those players that never shuts up and voices unwanted opinions during every players turn. Then wonders why nobody invites you back for another game.

Axis & Allies / House Rules / Paratroopers
|
on: March 03, 2012, 09:24:44 am
|
I was introduced to an optional rule last weekend that put a whole new twist on the game. Paratroopers. In a nutshell, a bomber is used as C130 air transport that can carry up to 3 INF to be dropped any where the plan can reach. These are seperate pieces from bombers so C130's cannot be used as such. 1) Can only load from an air base. 2) No attack or defense value. Can be used as a causulty. 3) If shot down by AA gun, cargo is lost too. 4) Can carry 1, 2 or 3 Inf. only. 5) 3 per country on the board at any one time. 6) Cost = $10 7) MAD = 6-0-0 China, ANZAC & France cannot purchase any. We pulled some bomber pieces from an old game and painted invasion stripes on them. (Silver for Allies. Red for Axis) GB & Germany used them to great advantage. I quickly learned that leaving a territory empty was an open invite for Paratroopers to blitz. I think this house rule adds some great fun to the game.

My sons and I will play a round or two an evening. Sometimes it take almost a month to complete a game, but we don't get burned out on it that way. It helps having a room I can leave the game up in too. We have been connecting up w/ others through these forums and playing 12-14 hours games! That works too!
