976  Axis & Allies / Other Axis & Allies Variants / Re: Great War 1914-18 on: April 21, 2009, 05:13:33 pm
might their be a lite version of this game, right now it seems it has a lot of rules and peics that would to expensive to buy. printing the map would alone cost too much for most people.

now it looks very different from that stupid imp games map
978  Axis & Allies / Other Axis & Allies Variants / Re: Modern Day Axis game on: April 20, 2009, 04:59:41 pm
I agree with tlasjr a axis and allies based modern combat game would be awsome, have all the worlds major powers fighting each other for todays statigic locations. I read alot of feorgin affairs/econamist/stratagypage/ which often talk about the global military situation and i would love for a game to represent that.

the main things in the way of a game like are.

1. In todays world important dicisions are made by banks/multinational corporations/popular opion instead of fascist/socialist states that command the entire soal of the nation they rule, this makes long protratracted war unlikly

2. You would need a whole new map with new peices which would be very expensive

3. You need to makes space a battlefeild which is hard to represent on a 2 d board of jeust earth

4. FInally Allieances are not set it could be US/EU/China/Japan vs India/Russia or just as easily US/EU/India vs. Russia/China/Iran
so alliancs would have to be maluable or their would have to be many different scenarios. I would also make the turns represent shorter amounts of time even as short as two weeks.

plus what do you do to simulate gurillia warfare which is so prevelent. If the game has two week truns through then it is less of an issue since gurilia warfare would be less of an issue
979  Axis & Allies / 1941 Scenario / Re: Attacking America on: April 20, 2009, 04:44:06 pm
for the german player you first has to control the atlantic which can be done a number of ways buts cost a lot and is usaully takes way from offensive ability on the eastern front.

I have seen japan do it a few times, you just need a really lazy and distracted american player, then put a transport in a sea zone that looks far away on the baord but really is just 2 spacces from the west cost, when the american player moves his inf out to go fight in europe, invade.

i would say most of the time trying to invade america at the expensce of other easyer to obtain objectives is foolish and a waste, it is a shame though since massive invasions of the US would be awsome to fight out.
980  Axis & Allies / Other Axis & Allies Variants / Re: AA50, 1939? on: April 20, 2009, 01:24:19 pm
Yes but if Gemrnay had not invaded the USSR in 1941 it might have been Germany that was being invaded in 1942

and in axis and allies even with the allies at war with japan china is almost completely destoryed on the first turn
981  Axis & Allies / Other Axis & Allies Variants / Re: AA50, 1939? on: April 19, 2009, 08:49:07 am
that sounds like a blueprint for a very interesting game Subotai

what if you hap a 1940 setup, where it was free for all but with historical victory conditions

US
must control eight vicotry cities

Russia must control eight vicotry cities

Germany/italy(still one player) must control london

Britain must control Germany

Japan must conquer all of china/asia

982  Axis & Allies / 1941 Scenario / Re: A Chess-players thoughts on strategy in A&A on: April 19, 2009, 08:32:03 am
dont get me wrong i love A&A especially the AA50, but comapring AA50 and chess in terms of stratagy is a little weird

In my opinion their really is not that much stratagy in A&A. although maybe in A&A their is technicly more variant in moves most of those moves are obviosly worthless and are never played, on top of that their is less player interaction. a game of AA50 might be 8-10 turns but chess games have way more turns and their for you are making many more decisions that will impact the outcome of the game. In A&A you also place your units on the board at the end of you turn. This means that your telling you oponent what your moves are the turn before you make them, therefore surprise is almost impossible to acheive unlike chess . If you want an optimal stratagy for any game it is surprise, but in a A&A you have to not be paying attention at all for something unexpected to happen.

A&A is fun becasue you get to order and kill many many plastic men and machines, but besides knowing the odds in a battle thier really is not a whole lot of stratagy to the game.
983  Axis & Allies / Other Axis & Allies Variants / Re: AA50, 1939? on: April 19, 2009, 07:17:18 am
I would think with a 1940 scenario you would have extra political rules or at least restictions on country entry

my objection to a 39 scenario is that nothing happened that year worth simulating.

another good date is 1950/ Korean War gone global deal. you could use most of the same peices too, just get some F86 Sabre peices for the allies and mig-15s for the soveits, plus maybe m26,m46s for allied tanks and some b-29 bombers

In any of these scenarios it would also probably require some editing of the map to make it good.
984  Axis & Allies / Other Axis & Allies Variants / Re: AA50, 1939? on: April 18, 2009, 06:41:48 pm
1939 is a very silly date to start any wargame. All that happened is poland was conquered and the Russia's launched a botched invasion of Finland which is something impossible to simulate in axis&allies unless the 2 finish infantry take four hits to kill each.

A much more intersting date is spring 1940, a whole lot happens that year that changed the war dramaticly. I  always feel in 1941-1943 setups that everything is locked in place and their is no varaity.

A 1944-1945 start date would also be intersting if you added some cold war rules, Italy would be on the allies side and their peices would also represent free french and Germany and Japan would be severly weakened. What would make it intersting is the Soveit Union would have its own victory conditions seperate from the US/UK/Italy.

Anyways I would love to make or for someone else to make a good 1940 scenario
985  Axis & Allies / House Rules / Re: Trisdin's A&A50 House Rules on: April 17, 2009, 09:33:58 am
I like how Russia starts with more tanks and not at war with germany
but why should escourt fighters have their range increased, A&A aircraft range is already unrelaistic enough and i dont see how stratgic bombing gives you more fuel capacity

and what happens if i am the US and using a spy dice and roll a chinese surrender, do i destroy my own units.

I also like the old techs and think if every tech is nation specific your missing out on parts of history. WHy not keep the old tech, and then just give each nationa 3 or 4 nation specifc advancments

obviosly the atmoic bomb is cool but the Germans were working on one too and before the US, if anything the atomic bomb should be a german tech and the US have to spy to get it.

I think it is also cool that indivdual genrals are represented, but i think it would be better if they were on the board and not just a tech

overall i think it is good even if I dont understand some rules and i will ask my group if they want to play these next game

988  Axis & Allies / House Rules / Re: AA50: House Rules on: January 25, 2009, 08:10:37 pm
fine, dont like my idea's

i am just saying why not leave the half-assed jobs for Larry Harris and Wizards of the Coast

although your house rules are great they do not attract the "casual" A&A player and leave players who are genuinly interested in World War 2 wanting more. You expect people to pay over a hundered dollars too print out your map so they can play with six pages of additonal rules!

If your going to go through the trouble of making a great map, make a great game to go along with it

and i agree 1939 is no fun, put i think an early 1940 setup could make the game a lot more historical and varied. I will explain exactly why if you want.

In  my opinon A&A should be a six to ten hour game that is highly varied. Alliances should take their turns together and they should be timed. 15 minutes before combat, 10 minutes after.

c me and my buddy, I have all the good idea's, he knows all about the magic(he calls it mathimatics) we will post our variant in a few months, you will like it. I promise.

by the way, why dont you just tell me how to edit your map, then i can stop annoying you.

989  Axis & Allies / House Rules / Re: AA50: House Rules on: January 25, 2009, 12:48:58 pm
OK, IL, I still think there should be a light and heavy crusier, but whatever the math says

I have been working on a D12 system of combat, with unquie unit values for most nations, and I was thinking of having the start date be set back too winter 1939-1940

Poland has already been taken so you dont have too have any scripted stuff like, Germany must conquer poland before it takes france, but it would still be early on in the war. I am also immagining that in this scenario the Soveit Union player has different goals and objectives than the rest of the allies.

Anyways, IL, what new territories would you add too AA50 for this start date, I wish none had to be added, but then the game just would not feel right. I am currently reading Heinz Gudarian's Panzer Leader which has sparked in me a greater interest in the Battle of France, I was thinking France would be divided up like in AAE but with a fourth terriotry that borders Belgium, the English Channel, Eastern France, and France. If I did this I think i would make another rule that you can not amphibiously asssault Nothwestern Europe(I think thats accuarte)

I was think thinking Siam, Iraq and Syria sould also be terriotries just so the political borders look right, but then again, I like the AA50 board and dont want too change it too much except for the new French territories

Also new units i was thinkingg about,
this is D12 and units cost about double ( would only be used in a 1940/1939 setup obviously)
                       C    M     A  D
Infantry Tanks   10   2      5  4   Only France and UK
Panzer I/II        10   2      7  3   Germany

Other Tanks values
                       C   M  A  D
Shermans         10  2   6  6  US and UK
T-34/KV-1        8   2   5  7   USSR
Panzer III/IV/V  11  2   8  6  Germany
Light tanks       10  2   5  3    Japan and Italy, maybe US too instead of Infantry tanks

I have a number of other changes too tank combat and will post in a month or two when I have finilized them. but was just wondering if you wanted too make a map for circa February 1940.
990  Axis & Allies / House Rules / Re: AA50: House Rules on: January 20, 2009, 06:30:10 pm
A little off topic, but IL what models from stytrex do you recommend too represent the extra units for each nation

In perticular I wanted too know what you recommend for representing Mechanized Infatry, Self-propelled artilery, Heavy Tanks, Light Crusiers, Battlecrsuers, and escort carrires
